I am trading my '74 Targa (2.7) car to my mechanic in exchange for some future wrenching. But what would be a rough value of the pieces he is getting ?
Basically all that is left after my scavenging is: The engine and transmission (which has been sitting for 5 years), these were working when parked. The odometer is broken but it shows 135,000 miles so I think I can assume a rebuild is needed. Front and rear fenders are good, but the doors (with chrome trim and vent windows), hood, and rear deck lid/spoiler are staying,as are the Targa top, the Fuchs wheels and front and rear bumpers A/C was non functioning but intact. Rusted out rear floors and MAJOR stuctural rust damage along the tunnel. Interior is basically trashed. Rough ideas anyone?. I need a fender mount oil cooler system fitted to my '77 Targa, would that be a fair trade for all concerned ?

I'd try to establish the market value of the key parts you have listed. Respectfully, I'd pay someone to tow what you've listed off my property.
But since you asked, $535.74 YMMV.

Maybe $500, but not worth it to me as I would then have to get rid of the scrap.

That's about what I was thinking actually, but I was just waiting for someone to chime in and cure me of the guilt I feel in disposing of the carcass. Thanks Guys.

If you Ebay all the parts that are easy to get off, the Fuchs might bring +/- $200.00-$300.00 if they are in decent shape, the targa top another +/- $200.00 in decent shape, the rebuildable engine and transmission maybe +/- $400.00 - $600.00 depending on the condition and maybe another +/- $100.00 - $200.00 in miscelleneous gauges and interior bits. If the glass is in good shape and you want to spend the time to take it off, figure another couple of hundred. From this total you'd have to subtract your time posting ads on Ebay (or here) and your time removing and packing all the parts as well as the value of the pain in the a$$ you'd get from trying to ship all these oversize pieces. If it were me, I think I'd settle for $500.00-$600.00 in mechanical work.

Please do a little research on the board before you do anything hasty-
a trans is worth 400.00 and a rebuildable engine complete w/ all trimmings is worth at least 800.00 provided it isnt water damaged, turns over by hand and has no major mechanical issues. As far as Fuchs are concerned they are worth no less than 150.00 ea. + provided they are in reasonable shape, needing a refinish maybe and depending on what they are ofcourse. My opinion would be to part it out yourself if you are up to it, if not you would be best off to price out the raw materials to do your cooler project and then find out the labor cost to install it. At the end of the day if you decide to do the trade make sure the mechanic understands that you are aware that the car is worth more than 500.00 or so and get something in writing that an agreement on its actual value has been made. Once its handed over and dismembered there will only be he said she said........ ask me how I know, just my 2 cents good luck- Jeff |

Why not let the wrench set the price? You know the old rule, "He who names the number first, loses".
If he says $500, you know it's worth more to him.... And he will gt the parts for your project as cheaply as he can, and do the work when it fits his schedule. So I doubt he'll "loose" in the deal.
