Help Removing rotors on 87 930
 

Can anyone tell me how I get the dust cover off of the front axle I am trying to replace my rotors. I found that it is not the same as a non-turbo(a simple dust cap). And why does it have threads in the middle hole.

It is a b*tch to get off.

It is threaded so you can put a tool in there for some leverage - I used a bolt and rigged my own "extractor" tool.

Yes it does...
I used two opposing screwdrivers and worked it to death. I did this after the stupid friction welded threaded center popped off when gently using a slide hammer tool.

There are other threads on this. Put a U clamp around the dust cap and then use the clamp as a place to pry on to get the cap out.

It is a royal PITA. Like stated above, I just keep working it with a screwdriver prying all around until it gets loose and pull it off.

i bought $8 worth of hardware which included a threaded rod to fit the welded nut, and then a few washers and a nut for the rod. I used the leverage of a steel plate on the lug botls as I tightened the nut against the plate.

Took no time at all and then.. pop.. off it goes.

i bought a threaded rod and use it in conjunction with a slide hammer. Makes it real easy to pull off then.

Ah so........very good ideas gents! I shall be modifying mine.

I welded a bolt to a piece of round stock to make a "T" handle, so I can yank it right off.

I use a custom made puller-slider that I bought about 10 years ago but you could make one yourself also.

The U-clamp will work on a 911 but NOT on the 930-911 turbo. The 911 dust covers stick out a bit whereas the 930's do not.

U clamp method DOES NOT WORK....the TURBO has the dust cover RECESSED.

U-clamp works for NON TURBO where there is clearance to get a U-clamp attached...

And...this may not simply POP off....I broke ( ! ) a slide hammer trying to get a turbo, bullet-proof cap off !!!!!

I needed to get the dust cap off my '84 turbo-look last weekend. I started off with a 3 lb. slide hammer and it's jaw broke on the third hit. So I bought a 13 lb. slide hammer and modified one of the pulling hooks to fit around the bolt I had screwed into the cap. The cap wouldn't budge at first so I kept hitting it harder until the threaded piece pulled out of the cap leaving a ~1/2" hole in the dust cap - the pulling hook was also bent some. I had a gear puller and took the jaws off it and reversed them so the fingers were pointing out and put two of them in the hole and bolted them together. Then I wrapped a chain pulling-attachment around it and started hammering away. I broke the welded chain twice and then the puller jaws pulled through the steel cap peeling the metal back. I turned the puller 90 degrees and had at it again... I was about to give up and then one fateful hammer the cap just popped out. I think it was the first time in 22 years it had been removed. A replacement dust cap is $59.75 with shipping...

Here is a pic of the aftermath... You can see the pulled-out threaded piece at the top and the chain that broke. The puller jaws still inserted into the hole and the chain wrapped around it. I got my replacement dust cap in a week ago so this ordeal is over.
