Dallas-area DIY Engine Drop
Hey guys,
Dropping my 3.3 turbo engine and Ruf 5spd tranny next Saturday at home in the Dallas/Ft Worth area en-route to a complete engine overhaul. It will be a first for me and I am welcoming help of any kind. Planning to start around 3PM on Saturday 4/29. Who knows what will follow... Please PM or e-mail me if you would like to come whether you're a pro or just want to watch... Cheers, Maxx

Where are you located? I might be able to lend a hand if close by. I am near downtown.

Neil, I'm in Colleyville/Grapevine. Hope that's not too far for you. I could use all the help available even if only for a short time.

Hey Maxx:
I'm just getting back into town after being gone for a couple of weeks, I'm sorry I missed this. Did it all go ok? If you need anything, whistle. Did you get the stand and adapter?

First thing to write is a huge thanks to John (Jastx) and Buck (88911coupe) for coming over and lending their help. We had a great time talking Porsches and things always seem to be clearer and easier when friends are around.
I started draining the fluids at 3PM and the guys showed up about 3:30PM. By 5:30PM the bumper was off and nearly everything was disconnected except the axle shafts, tranny mount and engine mount. We could have gone faster but we were in no hurry and we had to have a few hotdogs too. The first attempt to break loose the axles was in vain as my wimpy allen wrenches couldn't provide a fraction of the necessary torque. So...we thought maybe we would just drop the engine by itself now and get the tranny later. Well, we also couldn't see how it would be possible to reach all of the engine-trans nuts without some other tools. Bummer. Thus, the engine and tranny are still in the car, however, by all accounts it went extremely well. I went and purchased some allen head sockets and am just waiting to find a little more time to slide under there and finish the job. Again, lots of thanks to John and Buck and to everyone who offered help and advice. Wayne, the book was spot on! Ed, sorry you couldn't make it. Would have been fun to have you there. I bought an adapter ring from our host, but shortly afterwards bought used a stand, adapter ring and atv jack from Anthony (axl911) for a great price. Thus, I have a NIB adapter ring for sale for anyone interested. I'm going out of town for a bit, so won't get back to it for at least a week. I'll update here then. Thanks again everyone!

Not exactly the picture I was hoping to post, but still a great view. Hopefully the obligatory success shot will follow soon...

if i can make a suggestion. along with the allen sockets, get an extra 6mm, a long extension (very long), and some of those sears bolt out tools, for stripped fasteners. the long allen lets you do the work while kneeling at the side of the car (rear wheels off of course), and you can really lean into it to prevent stripping. i dont know how long JP's extension is, but i think it is something like 18". maybe evenlonger. size matters. the extra 6mm is just in case you start rounding out the first one. the bolt out is for that dark hour when you do strip one. it makes it a no brainer. hell it works better than the allens. good luck. sweet car.

Thanks for the tips vash. I was planning to reach in from the sides as you suggest mainly because I do not like wrenching hard from under the car when I am alone. I was also thinking of using my impact gun on these. FYI - my bolts have 8mm head sockets. Maybe different on your SC?
Cheers, Maxx

Sorry I had to depart and too bad about the allen bolts. I stumbled across a really nice set some time ago at a local discount parts store in Tulsa and they are made of really hard metal. I've never had them fail and on one side they are sort of rounded so they can work at an angle. Let me know if you run into any surprises. I spent the last 2 days fighting a battle with my clutch master cylinder...I don't want to have to replace that again anytime soon.

Forgot to mention...the car is stunning! I now have a terminal case of fat fender envy.
