K&N air filter installation question

Just purchased the Kit and comes with the flange, upon removing my airbox I noticed a breather hose connected to the back of it, there is no fitting on the K&N flange to accomodate this hose, where should it go? Thanks

I had a bmc kit and got small breather air filters to fit in the hose. I beleive your talking about the one that goes to the oil filler tube. Pepboys and autozone/advance auto should carry the small filters to fit there.

I believe there's an inlet port on the Watershield top cover. Might need a pvc hose adapter to install - not sure. Hose from oil filler pipe goes here.

I would suggest not using a breather filter directly on the oil tank vent hose. On some engines, at high speed there could be a lot of oil slung into that passage. If you experience a lot of oil film in the engine compartment, you might want to install a catch can between the filler pipe and the breather filter or filter housing.

The small breather air filter would do the trick, just keep the engine oil level "a click" low.

I only had one hose hooked up to the back of my '85 air box. When I replaced it with an aftermarket air filter I just zip tied that hose up and out of the way. It is open to the air. I haven't had a problem yet and I've driven it quite a bit this summer. Here is the thread it was brought up in:

Fresh Air Intake

I have a similar situation. I bought my car with an aftermarket intake already there. I found the same hose laying in back(front) of the engine and couldn't find where it was supposed to go. I bought a stock airbox - but it is different from the one in the picture. The air box I bought does not have the connector like that one so I must have the wrong year airbox. My engine bay had a relatively thick coating of air/dirt around it - I don't know if it might have come from that hose or somewhere else. I'm going to find one of those small crankcase breathers to put on the end of the hose and minimize any problems. I've found that unifilter makes something suitable.

That's why aftermarket stuff sucks......

It should have the nipple to connect the oil breather line....

If it doesn't...the *best* ( not easiest) approach is to route the line to an accumulator tank ( top or top/side entry..ther tank itself should have a bottom drain valve)...and the top of the tank is then vented to the small cone shaped filters that someone here posted about....

A lot of extra plumbing to do it "right".....

PS--- some cone filter mounts *do* have the nipple to connect the oil breather hose. If you absolutely must have these cone filters ( which do nothing better than stock), then you're best off finding one with such a connection.

The breather hoses will mount into the water sheds (or somewhere within close distance to the air filters so any oil vapor is sucked in). The alternative would be a small external filter (or an EMPI VW kit)

buster:

If you re-read my post you will note that although a small filter *may* work..for a short period of time....it's not really a good longer term solution. The vapor can be liquid-laden or simply condense, and such a filter gets saturated pretty quick..with a mess. Best to route to a bottle, with a drain valve on the bottom ( so you can drain when full)...and this bottle..then... has a vent line on top that goes to such a small filter.

Lotsa junk to hang on to your car because a nipple is not provided in the intake of the aftermarket stuff in the first place..... IMHO .....

You are certainly right Wil. An external filter will sure need frequent maintenance to avoid a mess. As so often it is the cheapest way initially but takes more work later to keep it working properly. The stock setup is not bad and you have to clean the K&N air filters with the regular maintenance intervals anyway. The bottle solution sure looks "racy" but it takes some efforts to make it look clean.
