How to tell 69 from a 70?
I would really like to know the difference between a 1969 911s to a 1970 911T, both are Targas. I have the opportunity to buy each. Neither one have the motors or transmissions so I'm basically wondering about body panels, trim, interior, any differences between the two.
Another question is where can I find all of the identifiers in the car The vin tag, etc.... Is the body stamped anywhere with a ID #. Thanks for your help, Mike

There may be other ways to tell but I think the 69 was the only year they used the push button (with your thumb) outside door handle. There is a vin number stamped inside the trunk by the gas tank, upper left side

The 69S that I have here has an OEM oil cooler and lines to the right front fender. Easy to see.....

My '69 has a push-button that stands proud of the handle, but is shrouded by a couple of buttresses, in the earlier cars there were no buttresses. The '70/'71's were the first year that had a trigger behind the handle.
If it were me I'd get the S (assuming comparable condition). The tach will have a 7500 RPM red-line, it will have the oil cooler, better gauges (unless the T has the "S" instrument option) and be an all around more desirable model. You can pick-up a 2.0S engine and be fully in the "Early S" club. If you put an S engine in the T, you'll just have a T with a hot-rod motor.

John, you're a woodworker?
FWIW -- 'proud' means it sticks up above the surface I was going to post that also, so I'll instead post a warning -- it's easy to change the handles on these cars... And, yes, the logic re the S is inescapable...

But since neither has an engine/tranny, go for the one with the least rust and put a 3.6L motor in it.

Yup. Other than the engine, external cooler and the requisite VIN tags, the only difference is the trim level which would have been available to T and E models as well. All things equal, the S is more desireable. However, rust is a big variable You'd have to weigh the difference between the cost of getting rid of it (and all that entails) and its value afterwards. Oh yeah, don't forget to add in the cost of a drivetrain.
Or you could possibly save some money and begin the driving expereince by buying a running version and start from there. Sherwood |

The VIN is found in the trunk upper left of the gas tank as mentioned. It's also found on an aluminum plate mounted to the front hood latch panel. The other two places are on a sticker on the drivers door jamb and also on the drivers side A pillar.
Euro cars did not have the VIN on the A pillar or door jamb however.
