First drive of the year - Gratuitous Pics

I finally got the old 74 out of storage for the year. I keep it in storage for the winter at a friend's house about 35 miles from my home. Rather than have someone drive me out to pick up the car, and waste the gas, I decided to take my bicycle. It really gives you the opportunity to enjoy the nice, winding roads in two similar ways but with completely different means. One is quiet, smooth, and slow (relatively). The other is noisy, firm, and quick.

It rained a bit while riding out but all the rain cleared up right as I arrived on my bicycle. All I did was connect the battery and give the fuel pump some time to run and the 911 fired right up. She ran cool, about 185 degrees on the way home, the front mount trombone I put in last year was well worth it, as the temps stay well in check even while driving spiritedly. I normally drive at or below the speed limit, but I was able to let the car stretch its legs and it was still pulling strong at quite a clip when I decided it was a good time to slow down. The section of Rt 202 I travelled was beautifully paved, virtually no cracks, no houses, a brisk speed limit, and winding curves with beautiful views -- there's not much more I could ask for.

In case you guys have never tried to fit a 62cm roadie in your 911, it is not an easy task. I took off both wheels, leaned back the passenger seat, and I still had to sit to one side and couldn't shift in a normal manner. I put a glove on the rear dropouts so that they wouldn't damage the rear windshield.

Without further adieu, here are the pics:

What a beautiful start to your 2006 season! Congrats on the 35mi bike ride, by the way. I haven't done anything like that since I got my drivers licence! Don't forget to change your member description above your avatar too.

Is that paint color Emerald Green Metallic?
My dad had a 74 coupe in that color, at first most people hated it, but it grows on you pretty fast. It be came known as the Green Machine.

450: that is some remants of silicon that the PO used to hold a cheap dash cover on with. I removed most of it yesterday.

Driver/Charles, yes it is Emerald Green Metallic and it does look fantastic in many situations. Its not my favorite but it could be much worse. The low resolution photos don't do it justice in the sun. It appears too flat and pale.

RCM, most definately! No need to wait until fall, there is some fantastic driving to be done now.

I have enough trouble putting my bike in my station wagon.

I have put more bike miles/year than Porsche miles /year for a long time.

current ratio(2006) 645/585

We should see if we can reurect the trip we had planned in Central MA. I think DeanP had a route laid out......

Bill, I must be close to riding more miles than driving in the 74. I definately ride more frequently. The only issue this year is that I have started riding a single speed commuter/beater, and although it's different and fun it definately hinders your mileage per day in hilly terrain. I actually chose to ride to get the Porsche rather than ride out to Troy for Cinco de Mayo, because I was out too late the night before.

Klaucke,
Its a good day when you retrive the car from storage (and it starts!)
The bike wheels should easily fit in the trunk. Also you can use the pass seatbelt to hold the frame in place on those sharp corners..
