Did Porsche make a 29mm rear torsion bar for the 915 911?

I am in discussion with someone to purchase a set of OEM 29mm rear torsion bars from an 86 (915) 911 with 20000Km use on them. I have a couple of questions for you experts before I pay him!
.- Looking at the PP site, I can not find a OEM 29mm rear torsion bar listed - did Porsche make 29mm ones?
.- Will these fit my 78 sc? I am assuming they will as I have the 915?
.- I am going to fit 22.5mm hollow Sway-a-way on the front, is 29mm a good match for the back?
.- How long do they last? Should I worry that they have already been used for 20000Km?

I don't think Porsche ever made a 29mm rear torsion bar, but never say never.

As long as they appear fine (i.e. no corrosion, etc.) they should be perfectly fine. I put used torsion bars in my car. That was 10 years ago. Also FWIW, I have 22mm bars in the front and 29s in the rear and I think the combination works fine.

Thank you mike. Only last question is on fit. They are from an 86 and I have a 79sc. As far as I know the only change in rear torsion bars is between the 915 and G50 models. So if the 86 has a 915, then they should fit fine on my car?

Yep, they should fit fine. The only ones you have to avoid is the rear bars for '87-'89 cars (the G50 cars, like you mention).

Hey Pål.
Have you started your suspension rebuild?
Found out what the problem was with the offset of the wheel?

OEM rear torsion bars for '86 were 25mm. Earlier Carrera's had 24.1mm rear bars.

The only "large" torsion bars for a 915 that were ever offered were for the rare SC/RS of 1983....all sorts of sizes ( up to, or larger than 29mm ? ) might have been available. If these are Porsche pieces, it would be a good find, and will likely "fit" better than some aftermarket. Sanders bars reputedly fit well and some Weltmeisters require a little bit of filing on occasion...

Thank you all...

Magnus - I have not started yet, still collecting the parts. I want to
replace/upgrade most parts, and do not want to take everything apart several times. Project delayed until next winter now I think - gives me more time to collect the parts

Wil - Again, you come to my rescue I have been supplied with 2 pictures of the bars, and they do have a Porsche label on them. I am assured that they are 29mm, and are in very good condition. I have agreed to the price and they are getting shipped to me during the week...

Can you read the part number? The last number looks like an "11" which doesn't match the "normal" number for an '86. Myabe you scored some rare parts. Measure them when you get them and let us know.

OK, I have managed to get some more info from on these. They are getting shipped today, so I should have them by the end of the week - I hope!!!

I spoke to him again, and he has informed me that he ordered them as 29mm Porsche parts two years back with the part numbers:
.- 91133310111
.- 91133310211

I have had a look in the PDF version of the PET, and can not find these numbers. I can see that 91133310xxx is the number for SC Torsion Bars - so that should be a good sign

Pål,
When I did a part # search for the part # with the PET it came back with "torsion bar". It doesn't tell you anything about what size, model or year. I wish there was a way top search for all occurances.

Then you got one better than me - I got nothing. I have done a search on Pelican, and got this -

TORSION BAR
- This is a special-order, non-returnable, part
(availability and shipping charges may vary).

Maybe Wayne can add some additional information on this - if he reads this thread

Could they be "turbo" bars?

Maybe a dumb question, but: I'm wondering if he is measuring 29mm at the spline? I have some stock rear bars ('86 911) in my attic, I could measure the diameter at the spline. Would hate to have you get taken.

If they are truly factory parts, I'd sell them for a premium and buy the hollow sanders bars for less.

bigrubberjeep:

I think we have already established that 915 ( 930) type bars for the turbo are 26mm....

I also mention that one could have bought a number of "spares" for the street/race SC/RS of 1983.. these cars show optional "big" bars available for them....maybe up to 31 mm IIRC, certainly 29mm....

The diameter is measured away from the splines....on the solid diameter near the center, for instance...

Why?? I think it would be cool to have them on my car if they are factory. Or will the hollow bars be sooooo much better?
Then again, if they are original factory 29mm rear torsion bars (which it looks like they are), what would they be worth - second hand and in very good condition??
