Replacing Front Shocks
I'm about to replace my front shocks on my 84. They are Bilstein. I understand there is a roll pin I need to drive out. I looked in our host's catalog and could not find replacements. I suspect I will need to put new ones back in after driving the old ones out. Are they in the catalog and I'm not seeing them?

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a pin.
Are you thinking of the ball joint pin?

New pins are a good idea, if you remember to order them. They can be re-used if you're gentle removing them.

Must have been a beer induced comment.
There are pins on an 86?

Thanks for the "positive" replies. The pictures are great and most helpful. I was going to try to reuse the roll pins but after 20 some odd years I'm not sure what shape they will be in when they come out. I was having a hard time finding them listed on the host site.l I'll give them a call tomorrow..

Did you buy new inserts? Mine came with new roll pins.

911 Rod,
More important than the year, is the style of strut. Some had Bilsteins from the factory, others had Boge. Boges don't have the pin, Bilsteins do. Boges changed from internal to external threads though, sometime around '86ish...... -Chris

If you don't have a replacement pin, don't use anything but the correct size roll pin punch. It can be done with a standard pin-punch, but the odds of screwing up the pin are much higher.

Thanks for that advice and the link. I bought these inserts slightly used, and no roll pin came with them. I should talk to the guy I got them from .. I don't have replacements so I'm going to call bilstein and see if I can buy replacements. I'll also look into the punches. I didn't know there were specific punches for roll pins but that really makes sense. That was a really intersting link you included.
