Kudos to Mobil 1 75w 90 syn gear lube

Just changed out the tranny fluid to baseline my Carrera, and must say that my tranny shifts real nice now. When it warmed up the shift feel was excellent. I think it was the first change out since new, so 86000 miles and 19 years has to make a difference. Also I bought a pump from NAPA for 7 dollars and it made for a real easy fill.

JeffO, I was just about to do the same on my '88. I can't seem to find where to fill the box. I looked it up in my Bentley manual, but it seemed vague. Very unlike Bentley. Anyway.

Thanks

Excuse my ignorance but is that a G50 or 915 in the 1988?

Its the G-50, and the fill plug is on the top side of the tranny. Open this first. Then drain the fluid. That way you do not drain then realize you can not fill.

It's a ten millimeter allen. I had one in the factory tool kit , but bought one at the hardware store so as not to bugger up the OE one.

I bought the Autozone 1 quart bottles, but when I checked the Mobil web site I only remember seeing one choice.

I also use Mobil 1 in my G50. I drive my car year-round and in cold weather I believe it has made quite a difference.

Fill plug was on the driver's side of the tranny, and drain hole on bottom. I used a long piece of vinyl tubing and filled directly from the bottle. When oil starts to run out of the fill hole, stop. A full trans case should be just up to the bottom of the side hole.

So is it a 17mm allen or 10mm allen to remove the plug? I read it was 17mm...

Thanks

I've found that "level with the bottom of the fill hole" is different if only the back of the car is raised, vs raising the whole car. Definitely holds more with the car level, so I raise the whole car on jack stands when doing this. Of course a lift would do the same thing...

Breaker Bar (longer the better) do not try to remove the filler or drain plug without a long breaker bar...hex socket, and PB blaster (you do not want to strip those plugs). Best to replace with new plugs if you have the chance...
