Careful on the lift - Taken from Rennlist
This isn't my car, I justed hosted the pictures for the owner.
     I am still not settled down from this.... To day is my last day of a vacation and I was working on my car, up on my lift, getting ready to wash it have a nice drive on this wonderful sunny day when all went bad. I had to raise the car lift a little when the electric breaker popped (not a big deal, has happened befor) I went to the main breaker box at the other end of the basement and reset it. As I walked back to the basement garage, I could hear the lift motor running!!!! As I ran in to that garage, I could hear the car roof and windshield being crushed!!!!!!!!!. I was able to unplug the lift, but the damage is done . I am so bummed. It appears that the lift malfunctioned (Mohawk A7 lift).

I have saftey bars on my lifts to avoid this, I used to have a shop with low ceilings, so it was necessary. My buddy borrowed my lift and did this to his own car, I couldnt imagine explaining this horror to a porshe customer. The saftey bars are somewhat generic, and could be used at any height , and on any lift. Sorry to hear about your misfortune, hopefully the roof is not too bad, and you get out with just a windshield and some body work, good luck

oh, christ..there's nothing anyone can say to relieve the sting of that pain. very sorry that it happened..my car's been 'hit and run' in the same rear quarter panel twice in one year. the good news is that it was nicely repaired each time. your damage, too, will be made right..

I would relocate the lift to the other side of the beam so that the next time the car will not be underneath the beam when you lift it.

That looks like a pro-shop that cheated on the ceiling height for the lift...and the eventual occured
Poor guy...poor car.

Ouch!
Sorry for your loss! It sure looks like the lift is in a very bad spot. Most require 12' of ceiling height.

The switches that ship with many of these lifts are bs; mine melted the poles together, likely what happened to the guy above. I keep a bungee on the tank to hold down the release lever, so I put that on the release and was able to get to the breaker. Switch will be replaced with a switch controlling a contactor.

I've got 2 remote shut-offs on mine due to a 9' ceiling along with the height limit switch. One is a light switch that shuts down the phase converter, the other is a dead throw blade switch that cuts power to the lift. Both are located within a couple feet of the lift area.
Looking at those pictures makes me want to add even more.

So it sounds like the switch on the lift malfunctioned, leaving it in the closed position and tripping the breaker; when the breaker was reset, the lift kept on going from where it left off?
My lift is hard-wired, so I wouldn't be able to un-plug it, but even with my tallest vehicle, there's nothing to hit on the way up.

I'm not suprised this installation trashed a car. It was an accident waiting to happen.
1) Tall lift never should have been installed with low ceiling. 2) Cricuit breakers were repeatedly tripping, there is a reason for this, and it should have been checked out. 3) If the lift wasn't "plugged in" with a socket, a service disconnect is required. Thom, if your lift is hardwired, add a disconnect.
