				paint work

Any one have any advice? I have a 1984 Guards red Targa that has been painted here and there and not too awful, but I would like to get the chips around the headlights/mirrors and the bumper refinished. A body shop told me today that he cannot match up the original color because of the age of the car the best he can do is "eyeball" the color to blend with the rest of the car.

He also quoted me $850, which seemed reasonable? Any opinions would be great. Thanks!

Unless your existing paint has faded or has oxidized significantly, I'd suggest you try another body shop. A competent shop that specializes in high end cars (i.e., Porsche, BMW, M-B) shouldn't have any problem matching old paint that is still shiny. I recently had the hood, front bumper and front fenders on my 8-year old red 3-series BMW repainted due to rock chips, and it is an absolutely perfect match.

However, if you have several shades of Guards Red now, I understand the shop's reluctance to attempt a good color match.
