Heel toe (today's potentially dumb question)

New 88 Carrera owner here. I cannot, for the life of me, get my right foot on the gas pedal to assist with a proper heel toe. I am not new to the track, or performance driving, but this is really becoming a pain. What have people done? Raised the gas pedal? Aftermarket pedals? Is it just me? Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Ben

When you get on track and get deeper into the pedal travel it'll be easier. You can also lower the break pedal - but not too much or you'll leave yourself without enough travel for heavy braking.

Some add a "winged" pedal.

I bought an aftermarket gas pedal and raised it quite a bit.

Here's what I did yesterday on my 964. Not sure if the pedals are the same. Works great but I may fine tune it a bit.

Ben, I will give you the poor man's solution. Buy a new stock plastic pedal, cut the bottom hinge off, screw it on top of the existing pedal (I moved mine about 1/4" to the left). It has worked great, without having to lower the brake pedal.

I don't know anyone can but on this P car, I just can't heel toe at all. It is impossible with the pedals setup, for me.

Adjustable gas pedal from Rennline. Raise it up about 2", and you can blip the throttle with your heel like Michael Schumacher.

My friend, who is more courageous, cut his throttle pushrod in half and added an adjustable turnbuckle thing. Accomplished the same as mine.

I was just looking at those on their site. Could be a reasonably cheap solution to a very frustrating problem.

Ben,

I just took a picture for you about 5 mins. ago of the throttle pedal. Sorry, didn't have time to vacuum the car or clean the pedals and stuff.

And I KNOW Schuey uses left foot braking, and the last F1 driver to use heel and toe was Michele Alboretto (may he rest in peace). I'm just saying the feel of the Rennline pedal is really sportscar-ish.

Left foot braking wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for that pesky clutch

Don't use your heel. Use the right half of your right foot, with the left half still on the brake. Also, you can raise the gas pedal about 1/2" with the adjustment in the rod that connects it to the linkage behind the floorboard.

I had the same problem. It does get much better at the track, but here's what I did. I bought the rennline race pedals (not the big throttle pedal). The pedals are bigger than stock and the throttle pedal has a flange on the left side. The combination of the flange on the throttle pedal and larger brake pedal makes a ton of difference. In addition, I raised the height of the throttle pedal. It's very easy to to do. Just remove the bolts at the bottom of the throttle pedal and then remove the shaft from the ball socket. Pull the pedal out and you'll see two nuts that adjust the height. I put mine in a vice because they were pretty fused.

The stock pedals are great for heel-and-toe-ing -- but a lot of guys don't really use their heels or their toes. They use the ball of their braking foot and roll it to the right for the blip.

The gas pedal is adjustable -- but you want to adjust it for track braking, not street braking. If you click on the 'lets go out for a lap' link in my signature, you can see some heel-and-toeing on a 911.

I have really skinny feet. Yet I can still heel-toe with the stock pedals. I just have to literally use my heel on the gas, and toes on the brake. After about a dozen track events I fabed the pedal below for less than ten dollars.

I think it was mentioned in the article linked to above, but the easiest thing I found to do (in addition to adjusting the brake pedal height) was to shim the right side of the gas pedal mount with a few washers. This angles the gas pedal over to the left, closer to the brake pedal. Now that's a 10 cent solution that works well, too!

Jack that looks like a great video. I tried to watch it on my dial-up, old, and slow computer. But, I'm going to have to find someone w/ a faster computer to watch it. Looks like fun. Thanks, it also looks very instructional. My cabriolet is in the shop getting the top fixed and I have a DAS roll bar on order from a fellow Pelican and will install it sometime this summer w/ a camera mount being purchased sometime in the near future. All I need to do is watch the video a few times and get the car to a track and get some instructions.

Nice footwork Jack! I've notice that the pedal placement on these cars is much better for the "real heel toe" blipping the throttle with your heel. I couldn't get my foot on the gas while braking no matter what I did the way my pedals were. I like it now for moderate braking but will probably raise the brake back up a bit.

Chad
