New Hi-Torque Starter-can't get used to the noise...

I put a new starter in yesterday as my old one gave up on me. It's a hi-torque starter, and it sounds a whole lot different than stock. It sounds to me like a 70's Toyota Corolla or something-a real "lightweight" sound.

But, the new one weighs 7 1/4 lbs less than the old!! Lightweight goodness.

How'd that starter installation go with the new lift? :)

Brian: It was awesome! I did the starter, installed new Bilstein Sports up front, new front pads and a brake flush in about 3 hours. I'm with the "what ever did I do without it" crowd now for sure.

You've taken another step!

I think of Colin Chapman every time I find the opportunity to take some weight off!

I love the sound of those high torque starters, reminds me of an old big block Mopar motor.

I agree that the starter sounds wimpy, but it all evens out (and then some) when my motor roars to life.

Agreed! Plus, I'm all set for when I build my 3.4L high(er) compression twin plug motor. :D

Efhughes, could you post the actual weight of your original starter?

Who supplied you the light one?

I was visiting my wifes family over the weekend and a nephew was showing me his lightweight starter for his economy Camaro drag car. Very unique and compact as it used a planetary gearset so the motor remains in-line with the nose gear. Whole unit might have been 3" in diameter.

This got me thinking...

15lbs 4oz, the new one is 8lbs on the nose. I bought it locally @ Zim's late Friday afternoon, as I had to get it in this weekend, otherwise I would've looked @ Pelican. I'd think they carry these also.

It's definitely smaller in diameter, and makes it pretty easy to install. The only change required to the stock setup, was putting a spade connector on the small yellow wire from the ignition. The big cables bolted right on.

I bought one from our host, it was an easy dropin, love the sound, it's def a lot lighter compared to the old Bosch unit.

My light weight starter doesn't make a significantly different noise from the stock unit. Make sure you installed it correctly!

rumours???is it true

I have a hi-torque starter on my 2.9 twinplug. I really like the weight savings and the sound.

A friend told my the the hi-torque is actually too powerful. It can cause damage to your "pinion"? ( I think that what he said) The force the starter gives off is not meant for our cars...It spins too hard, too fast.

Has any one else heard that??

There's definitely a different sound, its in correvtly.

I guess i should've clarified- I don't dislike, it just sounds like I'm starting a different car.

So what? So as I said above it is like starting a different car. After a few years of hearing the old starter, it's funny how you get used to something...

Wil Ferch 05-23-2006 07:04 AM

Not meant in any adversarial way...just asking......

it indeed is a different sound to get used to.....

Neilk 05-23-2006 07:10 AM

Ed, now you need to redo the corner balancing on your car.

efhughes3 05-23-2006 09:43 AM

Hey Wil, no sweat.

Neil-don't laugh, but I just dropped it off for 4 wheel align/balance....but, not because of the weight change.
