I have a 1988 Carrera with 160K miles. I am trying to replace the front and rear rotors:
1. I assume the front wheel bearings must come out. What parts will I need to do this (seals, O-rings, etc.) Should the bearings themselves be replaced? They are not groaning currently, but should I do them anyway? Is there anything else I have completely overlooked? 2. Are there similar issues on the rears or is it much more straightforward? Are there seals/O-rings/etc. to contend with or replace? |

The front wheel bearings should probably be replaced with that sort of mileage. You will need two of each inner and outer bearings and seals.
Rears discs are just remove and refit. Check the parking brake shoes and linkage. Depending on which discs you buy, to prevent corrosion by painting the outer disc center (not the friction surface) with the heat resistant paint. Use "flat silver" which looks original. If the hubs are not looking good they can be blasted clean. If you really want to, this is the time to replace the front and rear brake hoses and change the brake (and clutch) fluid. Pelican can supply all you need and if you haven't already, get the Bentley workshop manual.

Britwrench,
Thanks for the advice. Will do the bearings and seals. Did the brake lines/fluid last year so should be good there. Is corrosion on the disk center a real problem, or will I be OK without painting? Any special advice on packing the new bearings/special grease requirements? Thanks again..... |
