Yukon Cornelius Strikes Again!!!

thanks to Donnie, Dave and Jim for help on removing the CVs...I ended up removing all 8 bolts, then wedging the outboard CV which freed up easily leading to pulling them out from the 901 flanges. I've got to replace boots on these so another "while you're in there." I don't think these axles have ever been out of the car in it's 106K mile life.

Anyway, the motor drop was due to a terrible noise on start-up which as you can see from the pics, is certainly from a sticky pinion gear on the starter motor eating away the teeth on the flywheel.

Add one more to thousands of "thanks Grady" for that bit of info. Thanks Grady!

As you can see, most of the flywheel/ring gear teeth are completely gone. I guess Bosch uses tungsten or some other serious meta in their starter motor gears while Sachs uses left over tin from sardine cans. With all the oil about, I'm guessing it's going to need a rear main seal too.

Does anyone have some good "while you're in there" maintenance tips?

See anything that doesn't look right?

Good catch! Lucky it ws just a bad starter chewing up the ring gear teeth and not something worse. Do you have one of the "special clutch alignment" tools? If not, I'll try to dig up mine.

You might want to consider a Pelican Parts top end kit to fix all those nasty oil leaks....

Thanks Janus, I'll need it some day soon. Want to help with putting new shocks and trailing arms in? I think the right rear bearings are bad, either that or the outboard CV joint given the recent wump, wump, wump too.

Send us your flywheel and we will measure it to see if it can be resurfaced. If it can be resurfaced we can grind the clutch mating area and install a new ring gear making that expensive flywheel just like new. All for around $125

Well maybe better than new, because it will be lighter and it will be tested .

Only if I can do it sitting down.

I'll start searching for the alignment tool in the post-apocalyptic heap known as my basement. I'm relatively certain it was not lost in the Flood.

Bad CV's make a very specific sound. More of a clunk than a whump. I've replaced both sets of CV's on my 944. So I am very familiar with the sound. And fortunately, once they are removed from the car, replacing CV's on the axle is, in fact, a job that can be done while sitting down. It is messy, but surprisingly easy.
