I know I need the alen socket type for the CV boot replacement. Can someone please let me know what size. I need to buy it before I start.

If I'm not mistaken, it's 8mm to remove the CV bolts. Is that what you were asking?

a 3/8" drive 8mm Allen is what you want to remove the whole thing - not just the boot. A few cars used a 12 point drive of some type - triple square I think. Check your car first to be sure.

Be sure to read up on this by using the search button if you've never done it before. Severe damage can occur if the threads are greasy, if the bolts are not torqued correctly, if old or incorrect type of lock washers are used, or if the bolt torque is not checked again after 100-300 miles.

I had GREAT results using an impact wrench on those. It's a little tough (but doable) by hand.

Hardest part, IMHO, is getting the axel nut off before you ever get under the car. I tried using 1/2 inch drive breaker bar with extention pipe for leverage with no success.
Added heat directly to the nut with Oxy-acet torch and it came off easily. Specs call for it to be torqued to something like 340 ft/lbs.
Definitely concur on rechecking the bolts connecting the axel to the differential. Unless torqued adequately they will back out with disasterous results.

Should I head to the hardware store for some locking washers? Or maybe torque them a little more than 35lb?
