suspension refresh
Hey guys,
I'm looking to freshen up my suspension with some new rubber parts, shocks, maybe 22/28 torsion bars, anti-sway bars, etc... I just used our host's suspension wizard and came up with a total of about $2,200. I just don't have that kind of cash. The most I can spend is about 1k. What are some effective pieces I can replace in order to really get my money's worth? Thanks

Unfortunately shocks and T bars need to be matched properly, so you need to get these both if you want to change T bar size. If you have Bilsteins, I have heard that you can get them re-valved for around $60 each, for a total of $240 + shipping. Then throw in $500 for bigger T bars, and $150 for new rubber bushings (polyurethane) and you are at about $1000. Sway bars would come last, anyway, so you can leave them out.

Just chip away as your budget will allow. Try to group projects to mimimize trips to the alignment shop.
Also, don't go off of the deep end. Your car will handle great on neatrix bushings. Would poly bronze be better? yes, but they are major overkill for most. You can also search for "Home alignment" and "tripod method" to save yourself some money at the expense of more or your labor.

Shop for used t-bars (it's a waitng game for the right deal to come along, but they'll pop up), use polygraphite bushings, do the rear first, self-align, etc...

Torsion bars and schocks AND MUST go together. It can be done with $1K, with some weekend time, as mentioned above.

Suspension Refresh
Does this mean I shouldn't upgrade my shocks from Boges to Bilstein HD's without changing my torsion bars? It's a stock '87 Carrera.

Since I've owned my car, I have done a complete suspension refresh/upgrade. However, the very first thing I did, was replace the original Boges with Bilstein HDs on the front and Sports on the rear (along with some new tires) and a 'cheap alignment', and it made a world of difference in how the car handled and hugged the road. I've since installed 22/29 t-bars, polybronze bearings, monoballs, strut brace, ball joints, turbo tie-rods, lowered to euro height, etc. and as everyones says, it is a 'package deal'. but you won't go wrong by starting out incrementally with just new shocks.

You will be thrilled with doing the shocks AND torsion upgrade (and under 1K). You will be happy with just the shock upgrade.
