Do I stilll have to smog a 85 in CA
I had my 85 Carrera stored for about two year now.
My other two daily driver car is fairly new and requires smog every two years. The last I heard, a 73 or older car did not require smog. Did they move the date up? Do I have to smog my 85 Carrera? I live in sunny San Jose, CA. |

Yes. I just smoged my 911 this past March and I have an '81. I also heard that cars '73 and older did not require one but I'm not 100% sure on the year.

Thanks to our governor and other Ca. legislators, the 30 yr rolling exemption is long gone. Cars built in 1976 and later are targeted for smog til the end of time.

Here's good news - my buddy just had to have his 77 tARGA 3.0 smogged (passed) and he has DMV documentation stating that, unless he sells the car before it's 30 yrs old (next year), the car will never need to be smogged agai!
He & I were both surprised that our governator, et al, apparently reinstated the 30 year rolling exemption. He's faxing me the paperwork - unfortunately my SC's an 82, so I'm stuck for a while.

Just got my buddy's fax - here's the note on his smog papers:
Attention: The California emission program ia a thirty-year event. Your vehicle will not require an inspection in 2007 because this inspection is good for two years. Therefore, YOU WILL BE exempt from emission testing for the remainder of the vehicle life. Unless you sell the vehicle before 2008. I typed the above verbatim from the fax (.tif - couldn't cut & paste). The caps "YOU WILL BE" are the DMV's. Hope this makes a lotta you guys happy! - actually you'd have found out when you take your car in for smog. Cheers

I hope the above post is true, but highly doubt it. The www.dmv.ca.gov website says only 1975 and older are exempt... here's a cut and paste.
QUOTE: "Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids, motorcycles, trailers, or vehicles 1975 and older. Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification. The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the department will indicate if a smog certification is required. If a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees. However, you will not receive your new registration or year sticker until the smog information has been received by DMV. NOTE: Upon initial registration, nonresident and specially constructed vehicles 1976 and newer require smog certification. The six or less model years old rule does not apply to these vehicles. When you transfer a vehicle that is four or less model years old a smog certification is not required. A smog transfer fee will be collected from the new owner. When a vehicle is more than four model years old, a seller must provide evidence of a current smog certification except when one of the following occurs: The transfer occurs between a spouse, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or grandchild. A biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification). Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date of issuance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption? Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is: Hybrid 1975 year model or older Diesel powered Electric Natural gas powered and has a Gross Vehicle Weight rating of 14,001 lbs. or more. Motorcycle Trailer" END QUOTE |

Terry,
My only thought is that the state website isn't up to date? My buddie, who's in tops & upholstery dealing 99% with local car dealers warranty work, took it originally to a dealer (not Porsche) he does a lot of work for several years ago and was told "Ah, sorry man - you gotta take this to a smog-only place". So that's what he's been doing for the last 2 or 3 tests and each smog notice since his first test there has stated he was due and it had to be done at a smog-only emissions test place. That's what he's been doing every two years. When he took it in a month or so ago, to the same state certified smog-only place he'd been taking it, he recieved the "Attention" note on his paperwork - to his surprise & delight, because he didn't even bother to ask, being sure that 75 was the cast in bronze cut-off date. Damn government!

I wish it were true, but I am pretty sure it is not. Why? I own a '76!!!!!!!!!! I JUST put on my new sticker yesterday. I didn't have to smog because I only registered it for the first time back in January and I had to have it smogged then. Its every two years so I will know if this rolling 30 year has come back to life (Oh please, oh please!) then. In the meantime, gotta keep that CIS running good.

Dan - I called my buddy who will fax all his paperwork to you if you like.
I don't have a fax machine or I'd do it. Just supply me w/a fax # to give him. I don't understand the smog law at all. I met a guy a while back w/a big, not all that old, v8 hotrod. I asked him what he did come smog time. He said it was registered in a town somewhere in the high desert where he owned a cabin, and that the smog cert. didn't apply to his car in that area. I don't know what or who to believe - ?? David S.
