First engine drop
Dropped for trans rebuild. no injuries, minor bendage. Here is my magnet art and a tooth. The obligatory engine bay photos featuring my "help". I will be asking the traditional "should I change this" questions. Cheers, Mike

Got the end cover off. Found six more dog teeth. Not much more progress today for want of a 41mm or 1-7/16 socket. Tomorrow the rest comes out, start cleaning and waiting for parts. Cheers, Mike

So you are rebuilding your transmission. I have never done this but would like to. Could you describe what you are doing, like in a DIY manual type of way? It seems like you have done this before? Maybe you can start a new thread on this.
What part is it with the teeth gone? And what symptom would it produce (did it produce?) Very interesting photos to newbies like me! Thanks, |
I have followed a couple of people on their rebuilds here, that is all. There are many threads that I have copied and read. Try a search for user name 'rcecale' and subject 'Can't Shift Into First', also 'While the tranny's out' by ohecht. The article 915 Tranny Rebuild has links to more help. I have been lurking about here for a couple of years, but I am far from an expert. If you ask for help, you will get it. I will help you with what I can. James, the part with the teeth gone is the; '915 Synchro Hub / Dog Teeth (sold per each), Symmetrical 1st Gear 911 (1972-76), 2nd Gear 911 (1972-86)' for second gear. The other with the teeth ground off is; '915 Synchro Hub, Asymmetrical 1st, 911 (1977-86) Brand: Getrag', both purchased from our host. The reason I tore into the trans in the first place is because I found teeth on a gear oil change and I had trouble shifting into first.

Cool. Any special tools I will need? I saw you needed a 41mm socket. Were you serious? 22mm is my largest, but I will get what I need to do the job. It is good to hear that it is not that hard. When I pull my engine this summer, tranny is on the list of to do.

I am not an expert, but as is told here, you need no special tools. A good high lift jack and jack stands, 1-1/16 & 1-7/16 socket, somehow a way to remove the input shaft nut, and torque it back on (read the threads above). So far, the coming apart and cleaning has not been hard, but I still have to go back together. Cheers, Mike.

I'm doing my first engine/tranny drop to replace my engine with another. What did you do to get the tranny loose? What is the secret for removing the clutch cable and transaxle bolts? I'm in Wyandotte, MI. Thanks! |
Art- once the four nuts were off, I just wiggled the trans up and down several times (the engine was sitting on a furniture cart) and I saw the parting line start to separate. On the clutch cable, I pryed the spring off and the cable releases from the spring. My transaxle bolts were, I believe, #8 capscrews. Keep in mind that I am working on a 1981 SC, so some others here may be able to help you more. Do you need some help? I may be able to come lend a hand, and moral support, but very little expertise.

Thanks! I got one axle freed up, but I'm still fighting with the other. I'm going to try and get the clutch cable disconnected this wek, then hit it again ealry next Saturday and try and drop the engine/tranny together then. |
Art - I read about the pin in the other psot. I did not have that on my arm. Are you just going to leave the arm on? Cheers, Mike

But 25 years later there's still something exciting about taking this stuff apart and putting it back together....as long as it works when you're done, of course......:cool: |
