fan to cool turbo after shut down?

I just got my car back with new B&B, k27-s, and tial, and, after reading all the instructions regarding shut down, I was wondering, would it help if I were to get a small fan or blower from McMaster-Carr to just blow on the turbo for a spell after shut down in the garage.
couldn't hurt?
thanks
Bill K

Bill, I wouldn't think a fan is neccessary. Here's a post of cool down timing and a link to a pressurized after cooler.... Turbo cool down - Turbo timer

thanks Rick. saw that thread as it was passing thru.
What are we trying to accomplish?
If I understand correctly, when hot turbo stops, there is a possibility of coke-ing the now stagnant oil to a solid state creating a nasty seal-splitting deposit? So a blower on the unit will just speed up the cooling process and increase the odds that the oil will form deposits?

The oil passages are deep inside the turbo, I don't think having a fan blowing on the exterior surface will help at all.

So when I pull back in my garage, I let the engine idel one minute and I swing fan around and point it under the car..not sure if it does anything for the turbo but I feel good about air circulation under the car disapating heat ... my 2cents

I have had turbo cars for nearly 30 years and I have never had a turbo failure. I am very hard on them also. I don't let the oil warm up to go into boost cause I live on a busy street and would never leave my driveway if I did. I also don't let my car idle at all during shutdown. I do cruise for the last 1/2 mile or so to cool down but that is it.

Re: fan to cool turbo after shut down?

So, how do you like your car with new hardware? Is B&B IC or exhaust?

My old room mate used to haul butt down the street under full boost in his 924 turbo and shut down the engine as he was coasting to a stop and then jump out quickly. he thought it made him look cool. two turbos later he stopped doing that.

A very hot turbine rotor transfer heat down the shaft (and bearings) and will coke up some oils. Synthetic is less likely to coke that regular oil and has reduced the occurance of oil coking to the point where it is rare.
If you take it easy for a miles or so (off boost) before you shut down the turbine rotor will cool down enough so that is probably won't be a problem. Putting a fan on the outside will not cool the internal rotor so that won't help. You could hook up a turbo timer that keeps the engine running for a minute or two (and keeps oil circulating) after you turn it off and lock the car, or you could hook up a supplimental pressurized oil supply that cools the bearings and shaft after shut down.
personally, I just drive it mellow for a mile or two, and if i have been running it real hard I let it idle for a minute.

I know there used to be a assesory called turbo timer that would keep the engine running for a perset time for cool down even though the car was locked and vacated. Then when it was at the time limit, it would shut off. I haven't seen it for a while but it can be handy unless you park in your garage with the door down. I guess you could install the door timer for your garage door for after the turbo timer shuts off Or you could just not worry about it like Dean and me.

The family Beechcraft B36TC (turbo charged) requires about 4 minutes of idle before shutting the engine off. My dad is religious about this and has never had a problem.

48 day install necessated by the fact that we could not get the euro exhaust to fit the short bell housing w/o interferring w the clutch linkage. Hello B&B !
new hardware is awesome. turns out I was never experiencing full boost since I've had the car (1 yr). the oem wastegate was so carboned, up that the valve was never closing. Also, oem k-26 was finger shakin loose, plenty of oil at start-up.
I'm going to have to re-learn to drive this mojo all over again.
Boost seems instantaneous, (still no i/c yet on the 77).
first de is 3 day at the Glen, end of June.
I bought 2 springs from Steve at Imagine, the .8 and a 1 bar. I'll see how I like the .8 before I go tinkering

anyone need some 930 euro exhaust stuff? I have everything except the turbo/wastegate pipe.

A fan is not going to do any good at all...if you drive the car hard and sustain some continuous boost levels drive the car around a while and cool everything down as much as possible. If you are tracking the car really use the cool down lap to cool the car down .That is the best thing you can do. I have a few turbo cars and run them pretty hard and have had very few turbo failures.. never on a street car. You should be fine.. no worries just go and enjoy your updates and and give the car some time to cool before shut down
