Which is more reliable dailyrunner '84-89 or '89-93

Which of these is conciderred a more reliable day to day runner:
'84-89 Carerra or an '89- 93 964 C2 .
I am toying with the idea of selling the '71 targa and getting a more modern coupe which I can use for a day to day runner and be able to leave outside in exposed parking etc.
The wife has bagged the Golf GTI for the new baby.
I was going to get another car - station wagon or MPV/mini van!.
But that would leave the targa sitting in the garage and never getting used.
So, a reasonable option seems to sell the targa and let it go to a new home and purchase something which I can drive the snot out of and occaisonally leave in public parking for a few days at end.

The Carerra maybe is more purist and easier to work on- however I have not done much work on any of my cars in the past few years!

The 964 C2 is more modern and has better A/C- important here in the Mediterranean.

Amazingly the prices for 964 C2's is the same or less than for Carerras in the UK.
The prices here in France apear silly and Germany does not have many better options.

The 993 is unfortunately out of my budget as I feel I can get a much better 964 than a shabby 993.

Budget- about 15-17 UK pounds

Any opinions appreciated
Ben

I would go with the 964. They are newer, have better creature comforts, are quieter inside (for a daily driver this is important), have more power and yet achieve better economy, have better suspension, ABS brakes, etc.

This should be a no-brainer, imo.

Good luck with your purchase.

200k Daily Driver, and I track the car once in awhile. It is strong, and clean. I haven't owned a 964, but I can't find anything I don't like about either of my Carreras.

I did get stung badly by my '86 ragtop Carerra, however I appreciate now that it hopefully was a one off.
I think the 964's should have better A/C which as I mentioned is important.
Does the 964 run cooler temps?
Ben

964 is more comfy, less rough however also more stuff to break down aboard. has some items on the 89-90 cars. do a search.
cooling is the same after year 86 which has the fan on the front-cooler.
i use mine daily, no problemos.

Get the newest one you can afford. They just got better and better. I'm told the 964 drives similar to a 993... not sure how true that is though. I agree that the 964 would be a nicer drive on a daily basis, compared to an earlier car and has nicer creature comforts too. Get the 964. Nice torquey 3.6L twin plugged motor too

I've heard it said by Bruce Anderson something along the lines of "get the best condition of the newest year you can afford"

As far as reliability and as long as the 'newborn' quirks of the 964 has been dealt with - I think they are probably equally reliable.

For a daily driver, however, the 964 is probably a more comfortable choice.

Reliability as models are probably the same, but as always statistics does not apply to individuals. Hence, as stated before, the best - properly PPIŽd car - you can get for your money is good advice. Sometimes that is the newest, but not always.
