COnfused over 8 or 10mm bolt for cv joint

I need to clean and repack my cv joints and I'm ordering new bolts.

Pelican has for my '88 a 911 CV Joint Bolt, 10x50mm (late 1985-89), part 900-067-123-01.

The bolts currently on my car are 8mm with washers.

Do I reorder the same 8mm, or do I order the 10mm?

Make sure you're not confusing the wrenching feature (inside hex in the head) size with the bolt size. The bolt size is the diameter across the threads.

8mm key size is the wrenching feature size for M10 socket head cap screws; you have 10 mm bolts installed.

for next time, ...
it might be handy to pick up a metric bolt gage at a fastener store -- you drop the bolt thru various holes, biggest it fits in is the size; also usually have thread gages on them

Jim Sims,
umm.. if my bolt fit the alen socket 8mm, then the bolt is M10. Then if the alen socket size 10mm fit the bolt, the bolt is 12mm? For example the transmission drain and refill plugs?

rnln, maybe - and maybe probably - that is why a bolt gage is a good thing - get a cheap plastic one, or just measure the bolt size carefully

or size it by using a known nut ...

For metric socket head cap screws: M8 takes a 6mm hex key, M10 takes an 8 mm hex key and M12 takes a 10mm hex key.

For more information on metric socket head cap screws:

Pipe and drain plugs are likely different; look'em up.
