Must be some production code for the pillar or assembly.

M8 means M=metric, 8=8mm diameter, 10=10mm diameter etc.

My '72 has this as well. I think it's a subliminal suggestion to "mate".

.....I dont know if that's the meaning- not near bolts, not a part number for sure... its a raised part,,just above the door light switch. Made to be made noticed .

This is a rare code stamped by the only Australian to ever work on the Porsche production line - Kevin 'Kev' Davidson, referred to within the Porsche AG group as 'matey' for his jovial greetings to all and sundry.

If you remove your dashpad you'll find chalked underneath the words 'G'day' and 'struth - this is a bloody good car mate'

True story :-) Told after a few beers...mate.

i have always thought it to be a body code of sorts. kinda like the fox body cars and the a-bodys in the us type cars.

i have never looked at a pre 69 car to see if the code was different. now you have my curiosity.

old thread alert

my assumption is.
on early cars the counterplate for the hinge on the inside of the pillar is thinner(fact) and has different thread pitch 8x1?(guess).
for more strenght they went for thicker plate and at the same time for M8(1,25pitch) thread.
in order to avoid damage to the tread by useing the wrong thread bolts when repairs where carried out in the workshop(or even on the assambling line)
they marked the new pillar version with M8.

#300096 had damaged threads
so are those on 450710(non M8 912)

just guessing and could be all wrong

update---had a look today at the undamaged threads on 450710 ...looks like i hit the nail

I looked at a 68T (swb) today and the left side hinge pillar didn't have the M8 marking. What does this mean?
(I haven't checked right side hinge pillar unfortunately)
