Why all the angst in this thread? if in doubt pull it out... And try again.

Really for the cost and effort required if you have any doubts replace it either flush with the engine case or a bit below.

One problem with it being too deep is the possibility of the seal not working they way it was designed to work because it's been pressed up against the back wall of the recess.
This squashing action could affect the life of the seal. Let me explain further...

The seal has a steel spring running all the way around it. This spring is designed to apply to correct amount of pressure to provide a good seal that will also be long lasting.
The Squashing of the seal may increase the pressure applied to the sealing lip of the seal.

Too much pressure = It will seal but it won't last long.

Well I guess I'm getting another seal. I froze the new seal, lubed the crank with thick oil and the inside of the seal. Placed curil on outside of seal and when I went to install it I did not need to tap it in. I used my thumbs and the damn thing slid in so easy that it went past flush.
Going to snap a pic so others can confirm that I should do it again.

Ok this may explain my leak after my rebuild. I was sure I saw something that said install this seal slightly proud of the case...I guess I read wrong. I'll put it flush if/when I drop the engine again.

Check post 13 of this thread, has a great pic of how it should be installed.
