914 2.0 Project...Am I Crazy???

I was told about this car through friend. It's a 1973 numbers matching 2.0. 97,000 without a rebuild, but still running and shifting strong. Needs a complete repaint. Some minor rust, but nothing that can't be repaired. The price is fair for both parties.

Has anyone taken on a 914 project? Is this insanity?

In the early 80s I had a '75 2.0 that was very fun. Lowered with 19mm front sway bar, 140# rear springs etc.

I've restored a couple of these, I love 'em!

They are incredibly simple cars. It's hard to imagine a much simpler car. No power anything, etc.

Parts are also available, and for the most part dirt cheap.

Cool car, in a very nice color, too!

Looks like nice original condition, too, with the correct Fuchs, etc.

I did buy it! I'll pick it up early next week.

Mr. Zimmerman, I'm going to ignore your Rennlist threads in an effort to preserve my sleep. I assume it's going to be a "Gold Plated Porsche" tale of whoa. I restored my 911 and it made it into Excellent, Total 911, and Esses. It could NOT be worse than that! Right???

You might be right... you might be crazy... but it only takes a lunatic to takes this on...

All joking aside. Great looking car! Jump on it and get it. And keep us posted of the progress.

"Parts are also available, and for the most part dirt cheap." Maybe compared to 911 parts prices. While available, a lot of stuff is being made up by a dedicated group of die hard fans, because the cars are relatively unsupported by the manufacturer. There's a 914 forum here, but it's pretty dead. The REAL 914 crazies are on 914 World, and they'll welcome you with open arms. An amazing knowledge base, and always willing to help. BTW, I'm not too far from you, and my 914 experience is pretty extensive. Please feel free to contact me with any 914 questions you may have.

that probably has the good 2.0 in it. a bit more HP than the regular 2.0 plus the fuchs wheels.
that motor is not far in HP from the 6 if it is the one i am thinking of. i think the number ends in BA.

yes i did one. took a 73 down to bare metal, completely apart and put in a 2.2e 6 with webers.
incredibely fun to drive.

Rock on Craig. I did the same thing. Mine looks rougher than yours. Well done. Won't start rebuilding mine until the 911 is complete. Gotta keep my priorities straight

short answer... "yes, you are certifiably nuts."

more complete answer, the 914 is a great driving car. as long as you get a reasonable price on the paint, and do whatever else yourself, and don't expect to sell if for $50k, this could be a wonderful car to drive for a long time. don't change the color. add HP when you re-build the engine (if ever).

as i see it, i'd rather drive a 914 as a commuter car than buy a 2010 corolla or civic which gets the same gas mileage. plus, even though it won't be worth $50k, it'll be worth more in 5 years than the corolla or civic.

have fun. friend!!!
