Fuch polishing completed!

Just completed polishing my fuchs the hard way.....by hand with tires on... and just had to share some pics b/c the wife does not appreciate my work like you guys do! My fingers were actually bleeding under the nails last weekend. Black center repainting will be my next step.

They look good; what kind of polish did you use?

Process I used:

1) Oven cleaner
2) Wet sandpaper using WD40 as a lube 320, 400, 600, 1,200,
1,500 (re-application of oven cleaner during sanding process
seemed to help soften anodizing)
3) Using a 4" buffing wheel on a handheld drill - tripoli, white
compound then jeweller's rouge
4) Mothers polish as a final step

Takes forever but worth the effort IMO!

Absolutely wrong! Unless you live in a Sea Harbour or drive the car with fresh road salt, the shine will last all season. I've had mine polished for 4 seasons with no oxidation and just occasional polishing, like you would do for chrome.

Very nice!

I don't think you need to worry about them "unshining" - both of my sets of Fikses have polished lips and I've owned one set for 8 years. They still look great. Just hit the lips with some Mothers every 3rd or 4th car wash.

Fantastic Job. I just bought an '84 Carrera, (pics on "My Merry Christmas" post), and the wheels are the first project. Hope they come out as good as yours.

My tip-

When your done with the Mothers polish use coat the area with Mothers wax then buff off. You will be surprised at how much black tarnish is still on the wheels after polishing. The wax seals the area good.

Looks great! Wanna' come over and do mine sometime? Heck, I'd take the relatively short ride to Atlanta for you to polish them for me... Looks great, I love it. That might just be on my short to-do list.

Mine have been polished for quite a while and no sign of shine loss. I put mothers on them and they are still quite shiney and clean.

Well, mine suffer from unshining within a few days. Must be the climate. I would be very interested to hear of protection alternatives besides re-anodizing and vaseline (latter attracts dirt).

Why not tape off the tire and centers, wipe clean with a paint prep & spray clear on them?

The two downsides to clearcoating is a) most say they seem to lose some of their 'brightness', and b) the clearcoat seems to 'yellow' over time. I've never had very good luck with clearcoating, but then again, I'm not a painter by trade either.
