Upgrading an Early Car with a 964 Oil Tank
Now, that Tyson hs moved and has a new job, he must be bored with nothing to do...
So, this thread is for him to fill in his work on putting a 964 oil tank in front of the wheel well as Porsche has done on the 1972 911 and later on the 964 or 993 (?). The 964 oil tank should be used rather than one from a 993 because.... (?) The additional fittings needed to do this are .... (?) |

The position of the 964 thermostat (which is used on the 964 tank) is a little better than the 993 and looks a little more compact BUT I think that a better way to go is to use the 964 or 993 tank in conjunction with the 72 oil filter console machined for engine thermostat. That way the pricey 72 S oil cooler lines don't need to be sourced. You can use the hard suction line from the 964/993 also as it mimics the original 72 line and it is reasonably priced from the dealer.
Connecting the oil filter console to the oil tank is fairly straightforward with aircraft lines and adaptors- we like to run the pressure line in an arc up in the wheel well so wide tires don't rub it The long brass lines could be modified to connect to the tank , but on the installs we've done (inc Tyson's work on BB2 and his own car) aircraft hose with appropriate fittings was used to connect to the oil cooler up front.

... some edited wisdom:
The '72 tanks are rel. small - could be a problem for a track car. The 993 tank fits fine in an early car. - BV The other advantage is cooling. Having the tank in the engine compartment allows it to pick up heat off the engine block (and vice versa). - JO (who used a '72 tank in Black Booty II) Modifying the car for a remote filler tube and remote dipstick were the big roadblocks. It's easier to modify the '72 tank for more capacity, and a lot easier if you start with a '72 car. Also, all that crap that hangs down low on the 993 oil tank would need to be dealt with, or it would be both unsightly, and in harms way on a pre- '90 car with their higher rocker panels. - Tyson The '72 chassis, with it's forward tank, solves the problem of the suction hose running dangerously close to the B&B headers. On JO's car, Tyson built a heat shield to keep from cooking it. The headers were basically pre-heating the oil right before it went into the engine. - Tyson I found an old ad from P AG... In an ad for the 1972 911s, PAG stated that moving the oil tank changed the CG by 6" (!) That is a lot more than I would have thought. I'm assuming that their ad dept. wouldn't lie -- and it illegal to do so in the US at least. So, it seems this is a significant change - maybe even for a street car. I am just completing the 964 oil tank move on my 79 turbo project. The 964 tank is a better choice than 993 because it does not hang as low. I have added a filler neck & dip stick through the fender as in 911R, no lid. It took quite a bit of work but its not impossible. The mounts & strap also had to be fabricated. I am using a 964 filter console mounted where the stock 930 filter goes and have converted the whole lot to -16AN fittings. I am using an off the shelf Mocal thermostat mounted to the filter head outlet. The turbo oil return had to have a custom hard line made to adapt to the tank. The stock brass hard lines to the front cooler were simply cut off and converted to AN. All I have to do is make up all the "soft" lines. - aturboman (he escaped w/o ever posting pics!) The above is from: Moving the oil tank (a la 1972) As usual, BV has some great pics... But what was that CF 964 tank used for, Bill? I thought the stock 964 tanks were made of Al. (?) Was it from a 964 RS?

A guy posts pics of the 914 tanks he makes from Al and asks if there is any interest from 911 owners...
bigger oil tank for '72? Pics from MyTurbo3.6 on his intallation of a 964 tank into an early car: oil tank conversion

Thanks, Bill. That thing looks fabulous! I wonder how hard it would be for some of the CF people on the board to fabricate them?
