Wink Gear noise

Hello,

I need your help again. I have a 1971 911S with a 911 gearbox. When the car is cold I have no problem with the gearbox, but when it is hot it's very difficult to put the 1st gear or the reverse one when the car is totally stopped without an ugly gear noise. I had a short shift kit that I replaced last week by a standard one and we put Swepco oil. It's better and I prefer this than the short-shift.... but the problem to put the 1st and the reverse gear is still there when the engine is hot.

If you have any idea I would be very interested to have your opinion

Thank you again.

Vadim

Vadim,

There are a couple of possibilities: First is oil on the clutch disc. This is not an uncommon symptom and is temperature sensitive. It doesn't take much oil. The same symptom can be from a worn and shiny disc and flywheel/pressure plate surfaces.

Next, it isn’t uncommon to have linkage issues with the clutch cable, pedal assembly, clutch release arm and pivot. Rube Goldberg would be proud of the linkage on a ’70-’71.

Even a damaged pressure plate can exhibit this symptom when the tension springs are damaged.

While you are fixing this issue, you should repair the syncros in the transmission. They are no doubt damaged from the clashing. Left un-repaired they will get to where it will pop out of gear or not go into gear.

Best,
Grady

Something you might try if you haven't already with regards to getting it into first. At a complete stop touch second gear prior to selecting first.

Really you should follow Grady's advice here, but the above may help in the interim.

Thank you very much for your help ! That's true that when I put the second gear first the first one is a little bit easier. I will try to see every point that Grady indicated. I will talk about them to my mecanic. Thank you again !
