I am thinking about installing a GHL header/exhaust system on my 76 930. Is there anyone out there that has installed the same system on their 76 or 77 turbo? I'd like to get some feedback on whether it is complete bolt on or if there are any complications. Thanks

hi again
GHL does not make a system for the first generation 930's and basically, as you are about to find out, no one makes a 'bolt on' system for the 76-77 930. The list of hand fabrication and modifications we had to do to get a 'bolt on' B&B to fit my 77 is about as long as my arm. admitted, that some of the problems were also generated by the upgrade to a k-27S still... good luck Bill K

Well, here's a pic of the GHL, with heat exchangers, on my '77 930. Not too many things to change other than the oil return line from the catch tank and welding up the muffler where the wastegate exhaust used to enter. The GHL seems nicely made to me.

I have full GHL (headers + muffler) on 87 3.3 motor. My motor is stock otherwise. Awesome upgrade! Runs soooo much better even with stock turbo and everything else.

sorry, I guess I should have called GHL direct.
Just that there is no listing for 76-77 930 for GHL either on their website, or in any of the catalogs I've seen, and it was relayed to me on the board that they are NLA for 1st gen. I'm curious, does the GHL system work with the short bellhousing? I noticed that the crossover is at the opposite end as the B&B system.

Sorry for the semi-hijack, but a future upgrade for my 86 930 (stock)will be headers. All I want is to lower spool-up/boost threshold from about 3500 rpm down to 3000 rpm. Will headers alone do the job?
Also, from the posts above, I get the sense that GHL's quality and bolt-in fit might be better? |

knowing the guys at GHL, im sure they will tell you honestly what they can do for you over phone. the last thing they want is a pissed off end user. my exhaust wasnt on shelf when i went in person. told me following day to be there after noon and it would be done. when i got there my eyes hurt from how good the welds were and quality of workmanship was excellent. i call them the way i see 'em. if its good its good and if its CRAP ITS CRAP! after all the years of playing w/race cars and race bikes, im not in this to DO ANYTHING TWICE OR HALF ASSED! have only a 1000 miles on exhaust and no problemos so far. also didnt catch where you live, but i didnt feel like having to ship an item like this back if their were any warranty problems to some far off spot here in U.S. pelican wouldnt sell GHL if it were crap and they got alot of complaints about it.

Headers will help but a K27 will help a lot. But then at this point a new intercooler would be a good idea. If you can do this as a package you will be very happy. I know I was. Imagine Auto has a package like this on their web site and checking it out will give you some ideas and the other options available.
GHL vs B&B is a never ending debate. I have read how people have had good and bad experiences with both. I bought B&B 5 years ago and have not had a single problem. |

My car is also a 77 930 and though GHL does not list this year they do in fact make it! They are really great guys to work with!
I have had GHL heat delete headers and a dual 3" out GHL muffler, what they refer to as their "Race" muffler (A gutted muffler) on my car for 5 years and 10K miles. The quality is second to none! The stuff is bullet proof! I will buy it again for my next Porsche. Just my .02..................................C ![]()

any chance we could see some pics of the 76 & 77's being discussed here?
Is anyone else still without an intercooler? Chris, do you have a short bellhousing?

Are you planning on the dual or single outlet GHL muffler? GHL is great to work with but I (and some others) have found that a small change in the mounting angle where the header/turbo can result in a noticable "not level" look for the dual outlets.
If you were looking at a single outlet muffler you wouldn't have so much of a worry. That being said, the GHL muffler/header is an incredible upgrade and should do amazing things to reduce your turbo lag.

I have a couple pics of my set up. I will try to post better ones this weekend.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I do have a short bell housing that is not shown in the pic above. I will get a better pic of it tomorrow night when I have it on the rack. BlkBird is correct. My right side tail pipe is a bit lower. Drove me nuts at first but after 5 years its not so bad. LOL! .................................................. ......C ![]()
