weight of 80s 3 piece BBS vs. Fuchs

How much do the 3 piece BBS (7 and 8 by 16) that were available as an option in the 80s weigh? And how much do stock fuchs (7 and 8 by 16) weigh?

Thanks, George

I have the 80's BBS RS wheels.. 8" and 9" and they are not heavy at all.
Nice wheels for the track.. they are ( mark my word) making a comeback when it comes to style......sure they are old.. but they will be the next BIG wheel to own you watch .. style is cyclical....what's out in IN and what IN is out! hahaha

I bought 8's and 9's also - same offsets as my 8 and 9" x 16 fuchs.

They weighed 16.4 on the fronts - 17.2 lbs on the rears

Yeah, seems the 7 and 8s are 23 and 11. Makes sense. I may just get a set for the track ...

Cheers, George

I can confirm Jeremy's numbers.

I too have 8's and 9's.

Mine are +15mm for the 9 and and +28mm for the 8.

Hard to beat the bang for the buck as track wheels. Light, fairly strong and are ugly enough to not care much about them.

Obligatory picture...........

What should one pay for 7 and 8? Seems that the fuchs prices going through the roof, sortof drag the BBS with them. I thought these are $500 wheels but have trouble finding them for that. $800 seems to be more realistic. Would you pay that much?

Can someone please verify that for 7 and 8 BBS, the correct offset is 23 and 11? Thanks,

George

The 7's and 8's go for $500-$600 all day on eBay. I wouldn't pay $800. I paid that much for my 8's, 9's with the impression they were in good shape. But one of mine is damaged and needs a new barrel. I overpaid because i've seen good 8's, 9's go for less.

I can confirm that the 7's, 8's are +23mm and +11 mm offsets respectively. Any set you look at that are BBS RS 3 piece road wheels will have the offsets stamped in the center lug area, completely visible.

There's a set on eBay right now for $400. Too bad one of the rears is bent like a soda pop can. That's why they didn't sell the last time the auction was up.

I paid $650 for my 8's and 9's - hell of a deal compared to one ******* wheel.

Gentlemen,

Be a little careful with the size and offset assumptions. After all, these are 3-piece wheels, easily reconfigured, which have been in the hands of racers for about 20 years. Kevin points out that BBS stamped each center with a code ("RS" followed by 3 digits), which represented the configuration of outer and inner AS IT LEFT THE FACTORY. However, that code may have little resemblance to that wheel's configuration today.

Before purchasing these you need to get the BACKSPACE measurement (fronts and rears). If the backspaces match your current wheels, and the widths are correct, your fit will be perfect.

A word on pricing: Just because a descent set of 7" & 8" x 16" can be purchased for $600-$700 does not mean that 8" & 9" x 16" can be gotten for $800 or $900. Just like Fuchs, those 9" rears come at a premium! (Unless of course they have structural defects.)

So, JeremyD, you did indeed get a hellova deal on your 8s & 9s! IF you find any more at that price, call us first!!

Ed brings up a good point. No doubt about it.

The center's ET marking may not always be true to the dimensioning of the wheel halves. The first clue is messy sealant around the joint of the center and wheel halves. Untouched original BBS RS wheels will have a very clean joint. Repaired/reassembled wheels will usually have a smeared bead of silicone around the barrel and probably have a good bit of ooze coming out of the bolt holes on the nut side.

But even when you ask someone to confirm the backspacing? You can get doinked. Since I need an inboard barrel for my 9, I asked a fella to measure the wheel he had for sale. I even provided a picture to show exactly how, where to measure, plus the measurement dimension I was looking for. Dunno how I ended up with a wheel that doesn't have the right barrel size I need...............

I've got my 8, 9 wheels available for sale if you guys know of someone who'd be interested. Keep in mind one of the rear 9's is partially disassembled (bolts removed and cleaned of silicone) in anticipation of finding a replacement barrel.

I got an offer in locally for a set. We'll see. I don't want to spend too much, so I can sell my 15x7 and 8 and still have a bit money left for track tires.

George,

OPINION: If the photos Mark has posted above are of the actual wheels you are considering, and if they are all straight and true, they are EXCELLENT examples of the RS! By the time you save the cost of "shipping across the country" which frequently comes with nice wheels like these, you may have yourself a bargain! (Of course. so does Mark, because he need not wait for payment, box them up, put on lables, take them to UPS, etc.)
