What does it take to install a 3.0L in an 84
Re-tubing a race car and have a lead on a straight, rust-free 84 roller.
What am I going to have to deal with in installing a drive train from a 79 Euro? I'm assuming the biggest issue is the wiring harness, and I've never messed with that. Is this a DIY job? Any other issues with fuel lines or oil lines? I'm trying to determine the PITA factor when comparing this option to an SC roller.

You could certainly do it your self with some help from this forum. At my best, Im a novice mechanic, and I wouldn't hesitate to try it
We need more info on the 3.0? Keeping the CIS or going to carbs for the track? Carbs will make your life easier, but keeping the CIS shouldnt be real difficult either The fuel and oil systems should be easy with little or no changes. Assuming you kept the CIS, you would be replacing the stock 3.2 fuel filter with a 3.0 filter and fuel accumulator assembly, so you should expect to need a fitting or two to make everything work off of the '84 fuel lines 3.2 DME and wiring harness would get pulled out of the '84. Thats not a big deal if you are already pulling the carpet, interior, etc. Don't hack it up. Its probably worth a few hundred $$$ on ebay. There is no equivalent harness that would get re-pulled for the '79 motor. The DME gives the tach signal on the '84, so you are going to need to pull a wire from the tach to the engine compartment for the ignition trigger output off of the 3.0. The ignition system will probably be the biggest challenge. You are going to need to pull some wires for the CD ignition and then sort out the system on the 3.0 since all of the 3.2 ignition/timing stuff is handled by the DME in an '84 normally. Good luck. It shouldn't be too bad of a project. You can probably find some locals that frequent this board to help. Last edited by Shuie; 06-09-2006 at 06:04 PM.. |

Thanks for the info.
Your comments are in line with what I was expecting. Sounds like a couple of weekends with some wiring diagrams, some beer, and hopefully someone who knows more than me. I forgot to mention I'll also be swapping out all the suspension too. I had just installed all the trick Elephant racing parts, along with custom shocks. That's another weekend I guess.

Yep, I had a similar problem. All I needed was an engine swap. Turned into a complete hooligan car rebuild with a 3.2 swap, trailing arm swap, new WEVO'ed everything gearbox, and coilovers. 2 yrs later I almost ready to turn the key.
Good luck. Post pictures and ask questions if you get stuck. If I can do what I've done to my car with the help of this forum, anyone can. |
