BBRIII is a hot time!
Holy frickin' xmas...had to be 110 degrees at the base of the mountain coming back down...and stayed over 100 until close to downtown LA.
At any rate, plenty of pics should follow from others. I counted 25 cars with a good cross section of stock early, modded early, SC, 3.6 transplants, 993s, a scruffy thing and some funny black cockroach (one of my personal favorites). Great day...the drive up was spectacular with surprisingly courteous drivers pulling over to let us pass. Not so on the way down (too many cars), but no mishaps or tickets, at least going up. And the treat of the day was having SWB Sam send us off in person in the AM! Kudos to Sam for making it out, and to Ryan for organizing. |

It's currently 102 degrees in Redlands, but the Weather.com page points out that it's a dry heat, so it only feels like 99.
A great run -- I think it's safe to say it was the best of the series. No incidents, lots of swapped 3.6's, lots of fast curves. Pictures to follow.

![]() Arriving in scenic Big Bear, sleeply little town in the San Bernardino Mountains. ![]() One of the handful of 3.6 swaps at this year's event. I like the purposeful heater tube replacement on this one and the red intake (whose is it?) ![]() Porsches start lining up at the coffee shop at 7 am. The locals don't know what to make of it. ![]() Pretty soon the parking lot is nothing but Porsches. ![]() The Redlands sun begins to hint at what it has in store for us. ![]() Everyone grabs a final cup of coffee before the run. ![]() Ingo and Tyson Schmidt talk 911's with DD74 (David) and TRE Cup (Dave) in the background. ![]() Speaking of TRE, here's Dave's no-excuses 914-6.

![]() This is a gorgeous early car (that I think I've seen at R Gruppe). ![]() We took a pitstop for a photo op when we got to Big Bear Lake. The 73T Targa on the right is a low-miles car with everything original. It's like a time capsule. ![]() This was before breakfast/lunch at the Golden Nugget. I'm sure the chef about lost his mind when he saw the 30 hungry Porsche fans strolling in the door at the same time. ![]() The nice thing about Ryan's Big Bear Run is the wide variety of cars that attend. There's no organizing principle -- other than a bunch of drivers who want to attack some very twisty mountain roads. ![]() TEAM SWBSAM stickers were all over the place, in honor of Sam, who crashed his immaculate turbo look Carrera on a recent run on Angeles Crest Highway. ![]() And here's the guest of honor himself. Sam surprised us all by showing up. He's looking great, and was in great spirits. But when is Sam ever not in a good mood? I met his wife, as well. She's a really supportive and enthusiastic woman. Sam will be back, I predict. ![]() ![]() If you ever see either of these cars coming up behind you, get out of the way. Hans Stoehr's backdated SC is light and fast. Tyson's 'Scruffy' 72T is, too. On top of that, both are immensely skilled drivers.

![]() Ingo Schmitz's 3.6-powered 74 Targa is a triumph of power over tire. It's still a narrow-body, but it's got the muscle to throw those little tires around at will. ![]() Somehow, a lake looks a lot better with a couple dozen sports cars in front of it. ![]() Porsches as far as the eye could see. ![]() ![]() Like a snake getting ready to pounce on an unsuspecting highway. ![]() Old, new, and everything in between.

![]() Did I mention we were hungry? ![]() Here's Ryan, getting us all in our cars and moving out, right on time. ![]() That's Paul's (pbs911) 3.6 converted Targa. It's a gorgeous car, very clean and very fast. Cool bumper, too. ![]() Cool wheels and a menacing stance, too. ![]() Here's rfng's turbocharged SC. The thing is smart, simple and fast. ![]() Here's the exhaust for it. ![]() Here's Ryan's (Surflvr) SC. The last time I saw the car was at BBRI, where it ran well, but got a little loose at the speeds we were pushing him. This year, he led the way up the hill, at speeds that made me nervous with my big suspension and tires. When he gets a 3.6 in that car, it's going to be a rocket.

![]() Sam has a ways to go in his recovery still, but he's looking great. ![]() The Santa Barbara contingent left very early in the morning. Here's Dan Byers with his early Targa. ![]() I'm pretty sure this is Nostatic's SC and Max's 993S. ![]() Schubee's narrow 964-style. Having it drive behind me for a good part oft he drive, I can assure you it is a fast car. ![]() If you think Scruffy's paint is a funny color, you should see his owner's legs. Although that had changed by the end of the day -- a full day in a cab is like a trip to the tanning salon. ![]() The Jack-Olsen-style self-portrait... of Jack Olsen. (Okay, I'm also pretty pale.) ![]() I hope some people will post video they shot.

![]() Is this Curtisaa's car? His backdated Carrera is gorgeous, but this one looks like the genuine article. ![]() Variety is the spice of life. ![]() Yet another tribute to Sam. ![]() Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this one might be real. ![]() Ingo's 3.6. Clean, efficient... all business. ![]() Paul (pbs911) got his 3.6 polished up by Al Reed. It looks great. ![]() His wheels aren't too shabby, either.

Beautiful gathering of beautiful cars ... KUDOS to all.
TRECup: what's with the new front air dam on the teener? Are you going full-race on me? I can see it already ... flares and a 3.6 ![]() Tyson: how's the break-in going? Jack: I bet that a/c was worth its weight in gold today, huh? Black on Black 911 ... not conducive to ice cubes. By the way, I like the Porsche decal, but I would much rather see it say Carrera. Also glad to see the ducktail in effect. |

My car always runs hot when it is warm out (10 o'clock on the gauge). I usually avoid driving when conditions are like that.
Yesterday, I fabricated a blocker to force the air through the oil cooler. IT WORKED MIRACLES. Even in 105 F. with the A/C on full blast (for two hours straight) the temps never moved past half-way (9 o'clock). My A/C was really taxed. Full blast the whole time down the mountain and it only felt cool... It was hot out.

My temps never got above 220F at 8500 ft elevation, at full flog. on the way back on the 10 freeway in heavy but fast moving traffic, they stayed 190F and dropped down to 180F near L.A., and that's with me suffering from near heat stroke from the hot air coming in my vents! The inlet temps to my cooler had to be 120 degrees in that traffic. I couldn't believe my low oil temps. ![]() Marco, the break-in is going very well with the exception of what I think is a clogged idle circuit on #2. It runs on 5 unless I dip into the throttle. I just haven't had time to deal with it yet. I finished the cooler install last night at 8:00 PM. She goes like stink for a 2.4 liter. Just ask all those 3.6-into-early-car-swap guys I was running with. It surprised even me. She moves right along until about 6 grand then tapers off. Over all it's a great motor for the street. I suspect it'll only start to show some weakness on the track at higher revs, but I'm more than happy so far. I think after today the rings have begun to seat in. ![]() This year's run was an absolute blast, with lots of open twisty road and many courteous drivers pulling to the side to let us play. And a great group of people to hang out with and, of course, drink a few beers with afterward. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks Ryan! And Sam, it was awesome seeing you there this morning! That's the spirit! Hope to see you on the next one!

![]() it was great to see everyone, I'm starting to feel a lot better and even though I wasn't up to going on the run I'm glad I was able to make it out to see you guys off. I really need to thank my wife she's been running both stores since my accident and putting in some long hours while I've been laying around getting better asking her to get up at 5:30 to get us there by 7:30 was really asking a lot but she loves going to star bucks and it was half way to Yucca Valley where her family is so I didn't have to bend her arm to hard. ![]() I'd also like to thank Ryan & Jack for making up the stickers and all you guys for thinking of me, it's going to take some time but I can't wait to get back on the road. ![]() ![]() I'll tell you guys the hardest thing was to sit there and watch everyone heading out of the parking lot, and know I was going to Yucca Valley. ![]() I'm glad you guys had a great run I'm looking foward to the next one.
