Early Transmissions

Can anyone explain the meaning of the different transmission numbers used in early (prior to 72) 911's. In the specification lists, I see reference to 901 (that one I know), 902 and 911 transmissions. As an example, what is the difference between a 901 and 911 transmission, and what do the other numbers mean (ie, 901/00/12)?

Thanks, Tim
