917 Street Cars
Found some more photos of the street-legal 917. Apparently, there are 2: one is the Count Rossi car from an early thread and described in the book 'Porsche Specials'; a second one was registered in Germany in 1977.

Crazy to think of those being driven on the street!
BTW, looks like 2 different exhaust set-ups in the first 2 pictures.

The guy getting out of the first 917 looks like actor Jeff Daniels. The other guy looks like a young "Taxi Driver" era, Robert Dinero..."you talkin to me?"

Man, those things would kick but if they were flat 6 powered. I'd love to have one of those, some sort of decent repro with a turbo motor, or a 3.6 or 3.8 would be nice.

Jack, you may be right, but if I had one (a nice replica) and it was street legal, I would occasionally have it on the street. Probably not everyday, but from time to time, definitely.

How much does a 917 weigh?

Imagine a go cart with a flat 12, it weighs that much. Logically, a 917 with a lower reved 12 in it (practical lower end torque) probably would be cool to drive on the street.

Those are some crazy pictures, it's hard to believe they're real...
I'd still rather have a Dauer 962. ![]()

I remember reading about Count Rossi's car in Road & Track back in the day (around 1974 I seem to recall). Porsche gave it to him in appreciation for all of his sponsorship of the race teams.
I don't think it was de-tuned; just refurbished with the vertical tail fins removed and painted silver. Race Car Replicas here in Michigan builds a replica. I haven't seen one in person but their other replicas are nice.
