I would check all the wiring.... when they put the A/C in they must have bothered a wire under the dash or somewhere. With the car running I would lightly grab the wires 1 by1 and shake them, checking for a loose connection.

Also check your fuel relay

Does your car have a alarm with ING cut out?

islandmanpa. fresh fuel premium von union 76-full tank ! this one has us stumped. everything is new but fuel filter and that is staring me in the face as i drink my coffee on parts bench. not one lick of problems, not one indication, just flat went to 0 rpm and died. cough cough sputter sputter. so that will be changed. if that doesnt work what next do i look for??? its an 1987 so altitude adj. switch may be suspect???? the only difference in this trip was heat...............and damn it was hot! so hot i didnt want a beer...............AND THATS RARE!

herman a/c was already in car, just every component replaced. car does not have an alarm. the first problem a/c wasnt on. 2nd time it died wasnt on either. 3rd time a/c was on. so i have a/c variable, elevation variable and ALOT OF HEAT variable as far as outside temp. ran the car hard up to payson w/a/c on. car sat for an hour. 15-20 min later was first problem sat 15 min then cough cough sputter. and started. went down hill and on flat h-way died. sat 2 + hours started up. ran fine til hill outside payson. rpm's dropped shut a/c off, fired ignition while coasting and it lit up. drove another 60 miles flipped a/c on again and ran flawless w/exception of a lil surging at 65mph. beats the hell out of me.

Chuck:

In no particular order.... diagnose these items:
1.) DME relay... either simply replace..or open up the old one and look VERY CLOSELY ( with a lupe or magnifying glass) the soldered connections on the bottom of the relay. Porsche really messed up here, as the relay plugs in sideways..and continuous running vibration puts a big cantilever load on the base where the connections are. You * might* find hairline cracks on the soldered joints..apply soldering gun heat and re-flow solder, or apply new solder..or replace with new DME relay ( do this anyway and carry a spare). After you're done and hopefully fix this, place a spongy rubber block under teh relay to "support" it better and to take off the cantilever load on the base where it connects.

2.) ditto..same issue...hairline cracks on the soldered connections...but this time within the main DME unit itlself...this will take a longer time because of the numerous connections. Take your time as this will be one of those spurious failures...arghh....

3.) The two connectors on the flywheel ( reference and speed) plus the CHT sensor...all three connect via a connection "tree" on a post near the engine compartment blower. This is a subject of a separate thread so do a search on these sensors...their symptoms...and their repair/replace.

I'll bet dollars to doughnuts it's one of these that give you random high ambient air temp problems . For further assistance , seek out John Walker or Chris Bennet on this board.

Good luck !

wil ferch. thanks a million. staring at spare fuel filter and spare dme relay. car is under cover perfectly dust free until i drive to patricks @ 0-dark thirty monyana. i have anal-lyzed this and agonized over this while reading bentleys.

since we have done this trip before at breakneck speed , the only variable is ambient heat. buddy wants me to drive it today and put more miles on it. i said no i had enough fun the other day thank you. since it made it back to the farm, it should(?) make it to patricks. i can handle both replacing DME relay and fuel filter(wrenches staring me in face, 19 & 22mm) no problem. but i have decided as badly as i want to drive the snot out of it, NOT TO ADD ANY VARIABLES to patrick. the CHT has been upgraded as per patrick the other day.

since i am not a porsche certified mechanic, just a very hot and humid, beer drinking, jump in pool, come back, swear some more, throw wrenches, dump huge amounts cash replacing EVERY single component until entire car is new, kind of mechanic..............i will save the fun for the patrick boys, thereby not drinking copious amounts of beer, and having to pick up entire 3 tier roll away of tools up from dezert after i have flung them!

better yet by this thought process i will not be stranded on side of road waiting on another hillbilly skoal chewing tow truck moron that says, "yep, them thar porscheees are known to vapor lock!" and get more sunburn than i already am from the other day! watching millions of people drive by, ask if its broken down, what kind of car is that, how many speeds does it have? and other assorted idiotic questions that show me how many really stupid people there are in the world!!!!!

the best part was the circle k/chesters chicken in star valley. hence forth known as CRACK VALLEY! circle k was next to trailer park, yep your classic white trash meth trailer park. g/friend and i watched all sorts of really scary emaciated meth type people park car at chesters chicken and look over shoulders and sneak thru fence into trailer park. trailer park had tons of parking space! they would come back 15-30 minutes later looking all around very paronoid. get into truck/car and split. THANK GOD FOR A SPRINGFIELD 1911 .45! man did we stick out like a SORE THUMB! i cant begin to tell you how nice it is not being in the sun today and not sweating my A$$ off! will leave this for patricks to diagnose.

Let us know what you find.... no matter what they find, have them look for bum solder joints with hairline cracks..... don't want it "fixed" and then have it bite you again, eh?

well its 0-DARK THIRTY here in beautiful cloudy(YES) AZ. roommate is gonna follow me down to patricks this am to drop car off for "mystery shutdown". last night we actually had some rain and lots of blowing dust. we are slated for our typical monsoons here this week which is a huge relief from 100 bazillion degree days. g/friend and i have decided to forego taking p-car thruout southwest on warp speed tour due to the fun we had the other day in crack valley. figured it this way, less mileage put on car, less road rash,no hillbilly tow truck drivers, no being stuck in BFE! another friend of mine asked me to go to santa fe, new mex. in august for indian pow wow and checking out indian artifacts. my folks left me a huge kachina doll collection i have thought about selling overseas. so this could be good opportunity to take car on road trip, and have a certified garrett turbine mechanic with me in the event of a in-flight anomoly!

instead of p-car will instead be taking the duallie from hell that has been BAJA tested and runs like a top! g/friend likes the fact we can sleep in it, go off road to secret love/trout rendevous spots and generally take w/us the entire kitchen in camping gear! i am in favour of this only because of ONE REASON! i wont hear from some idiot moron skoal chewing tow truck driver ever on the entire trip..............."YEP THEM THAR PORSCHEEEEESSS ARE KNOWN TO VAPOR LOCK!" i almost came out of my skin with that brilliant rocket scientist remark! will keep you posted as to what the cause of our in-flight flame-out was!

well the CULPRIT?????? the CHT sensor!!!!! ARRRGGHH! so we now have new one installed, new fuel filter for the HALIBUTT, and we have rolled the front fenders due to some tire fender rub action we did not like. get her back monyana and its road test time again! thanks to all who responded to our anguish last week when we were stuck in CRACK VALLEY-ARIZONA!

Was going to tell you that my CHT sensor caused the same things to my '85 model here in Phoenix... Glad you found the problem!
