No real downsides. The positives are ligher weight. With 2 batteries you can store more current, but it is unnecessary unless you have electric windows, sunroof, big stereo, etc. People like myself who switch back are doing it for originality purposes; nothng more, nothing less.

For street driving the car will handle more predictably with a greater amount of mass further from the center of rotation.

It is no mystery why the factory located the batteries where they did, and used two of them: they duplicate the increased polar moment of inertia that was found to be helpful to street handling when the SWB 911's had cast-iron weights added to the bumper in 1966.

I have tried it in my '71 race car both ways and I get better lap times with more weight up front. The stopwatch doesn't lie.

Nice real world info, John! There's not enough of it around here, it seems.

thanks john! the reason i am looking into the switch has really nothing to do with weight savings or performance. the '69 has a pretty weak motor and hard tires. my dad drives it to work every once in a while. his "daily" summer car is a 2000 Boxster S. I want to know about the conversion because it is just a pain to have to deal with two batteries. charging both and such is annoying. has any one had experiance with the optima batteries.

I beleive that the rule is: Optima good, Odyssey bad.
