Engine lid release cable broke

I just tried to open my engine lid and the T-handle snapped off the cable in my hand. I've searched the forum, but couldn't find anything specific to a snapped cable. I just drained my oil tank, so I need to get the lid off. What do I do? Is there anywhere to grab the cable with a pliers?

Never mind. I pushed down on the lid and pulled up and it opened. Phew!

It is designed to release if the cable is disconnected or broken. That wasnt luck it was engineering. The front hood is the same way.

Boy! That's good to know!
I've always wondered what would happen if the release cable ever broke...

Thanks Kurt for the info.

umm... I wonder how can you just push down/lift up, and it can be opened.. unless something is loose. I tried it on my car and it was just sitting there laughing at me.
another thought. If it's that easy, anyone can walk by and open your engine lid and hood?

Europa Auto, I wonder the same thing.

RNLN, go ahead and unscrew the knob for your rear decklid. You will find that once cable tension is released it will not hold the decklid closed. Its kinda well known that they work that way. And no your hoods cannot open if someone simply pushes on it. But then if your cable tension is too loose ....

pjv911,
oh ok.... got it. When the cable loose, the tension release and the lock comes free.
Got it.
Thanks.

At what point did Porsche stop this "engineering" business? A couple nights ago I found out the hard way that the Boxster front trunk won't open when the battery is stone dead. Guess where the battery's located. Makes jumping it kind of hard. And this is deliberate (or at least known to Porsche) - it's stated in the manual. Their suggestion is "see your authorized Porsche dealer for service".

Put 12v power through your cig lighter or interior light bulb socket. Or anywhere else that you can access. It will power up the system. That happens to BMW cars too.
