Time it should take to check chain tensioner on an 84

I'm bringing my car to have the chain tensioner checked after hearing 3 times some noise from the lower engine when doing a hot restart and I think it maybe a filing chain tensioner.

Any idea on how long it should take my mechanic? He ain't the quickest in the East.....

Depends on how rusty the bolts are that attach the muffler to the heat exchanger.

You will also need to remove both cover plate. You will need new muffler gasket.

Seeing that he is probably not that quick 4 hours to 8 hours.

The labor will be more than just replacing BOTH tensioners. I wouldn't even think about it, when he is already in there anyway.

That said, generally 6-8 hours of labor sounds right. People pay way over a grand for the tensioner upgrade in my area. How long it really takes the guy is another question, but he's in it to make money.

You can do this yourself, you know ...

David,

I'm not the quickest in the East either, but I upgraded the tensioners on the old E last winter, taking about 8 hours total over a week or so (had to get longer bolts to replace a couple of the normal length studs).
Read the articles here in the tech section. If you are at all mechanically inclined, you can do the work in this area.

Thanks Les, I would enjoy doing it on my own but I do not have the proper garage set up for it. I want to change the house to accomadate the Porche but the wife thinks otherwise....Thanks for the guidance...
