Too Much Swepco?

Hi folks,

Just swapped out the transmission fluid in my 915 - let's hear it for the ease of the gravity method!

Now I'd like to hear about the downside of the gravity method: is it possible that I put too much fluid in there? After I pulled the tube it leaked a lot precious, precious Swepco. Eventually it slowed to a dribble and I closed it up with my convenient out-y plug. The catch is that I was on a slight slope, leaning away from the plug. I still had a little less than a quarter of a gallon-bottle of Swepco left.

Think I over-filled it? Should I worry about the dribbled stuff catching fire? (I wiped as much off as I could, but the tranny's rather groovy.)

Thanks!

Babak

use brake kleen on the tranny or a strong detergent

I think a 915 should take about 3 qts. - not sure if they differ from MG to Al or which you have, but IIRC that's what my Mg took. Sounds like you have about that in there.

Shouldnt' have to worry about any flame up, that area wont get that hot, but from a cleanliness and drip aviadance perspective, hit it with an industrial degreaser and a strong hose, or brake cleaner like Randy said.

Don't have my book in front of me, but 3 qts is what I put in mine.

Good rule of thumb is to always measure what you take out, then start with that amount on a refill as a baseline, and add from there if necessary until full.

spec is little over 3 quarts...so you *wouldn't* use up a whole gallon jug......

Filling up the 915 transmission, takes a little over three quarts.

You mention that you had approximately a quart left. Thus A) it sounds that you filled it with the correct amount, and B) the slight slope was indeed slight as you filled it with the correct amount!

You should be good to go! Enjoy! I noticed a subtble difference between Swepco and the prior fluid (a Valvoline transmission fluid) for my 915. Thus I will be staying with Swepco for some time to come. Nothing earthshattering but some of the shift balk was reduced or went away.

With regards to cleaning, I simply cleaned it up using some rags. You can use a degreaser if necessary but I seem to recall that some degreasers do not cohabitate well with magnesium or aluminum. Others can can perhaps expand upon this or say no worries.

Icemasters comment about monitoring what came out is right on. Yet another sanity check to allow the home mechanic some sort of comfort that they are changing the transmission fluid correctly.

One other thought, be sure to take the time to torque both the fill and drain plugs to spec! Do not retighten based upon what force you used to remove the plugs! This will ensure A)you don't strip the threads on the transmission, and B)it will be much easier for you to change the transmission fluid the next time around.

Thanks guys; with digital confidence I drove it for an hour today - soooo smooth! I'm thinking original transmission fluid; it was black as night.

Now I need to track down this shimmy I'm getting at 3100RPMs. I'll start another thread later. =)

Thanks again,

Babak
