Line dangling by itself - what is this line for?

Today I was doing the valve adjustment and found this line that is not attached to anything. Does anybody know what this is for?

What year car? If it's an SC, I'd say it's a vaccum hose which goes to the decel valve.

Opps. Cannot believe I forgot to mention the car specs.

It is a 1985 3.2 Carrera.

It should plug into the Ambient Air Valve, 2" size round valve
to the left of your oil filler cap as you look at your top picture.

Thanks for the post. I got around to look into the engine bay today, and found that the Ambient Air Valve was attached with 2 hoses already.

The one you pointed (arrowed "your hose" in the previous post) was about 1/2 inch (1.5 cm), securely attached to the valve. The one that is dangling is about 1/3 inch (1.0 cm), so it is a thinner hose.

Any more guesses???

My '88 3.2 has three hoses running to the ambient air valve. Two larger hoses and a smaller one (your loose hose?) that attaches to the valve just above the larger hose on the side of the valve that is towards the front of the car. Hope that helps.

I check the ambient air valve again, and there was a nipple at the top of the valve, so I plugged the wire there.

I checked through the Pelican website and found a couple of mentions about various versions of the valve, and one that has a nipple at the top, so I am pretty sure it is suposed to be like this as in the picture below:

Did you notice any difference with it now plugged in? Any change in idle?

No, I didn't notice any difference in idle or anything else.

I wonder what this valve does... I guess the line is supplying the ambient air pressure or temperature? If so, then connecting the line won't make much difference at start, when ambient (outside) condition is similar to that of the engine bay.

Maybe its function kicks in at high stress conditions, which I haven't tried.

I chased down the missing hose that you had dangling. My valve looks the same but it looks as though the nipple has broken off. There must be a way to retrofit a new nipple to the top. Anyone gone through this?

I had the engine checked by a Porsche mechanic and he confirmed that the vacuum hose (dangling hose) was supposed to be plugged at the top of the ambient air valve, as shown in the photo above. He said it shouldn't make much difference in drivability. Wonder why it's there. :)

It must be a common problem on 3.2s, mine was disconnected as well, probably displaced by someone fumbling with the filter box clamps. I also noticed no change in the way it ran after reconnecting it to the top of the valve.

I have 1985 also. It looks like you got it corrected.

My thought was it is the rubber hose with cloth brad which connects to the back side of the air filter housing. I thought the other end went to oil reservoir. Maybe it goes to the ambient air valve.

I discovered this while replacing shocks.
