				H4 bulb preference

I understand there are two bulbs to choose from for an H4 conversion. I have read that upgrades to the wiring circuit must be done with the higher powered 100 watt bulbs. I have a 69 911 E and I'd like to know what I must consider to get maximum candlepower w/o major surgery. This is not covered in Waynes 101 projects. Does each light need to go on a separate circuit? Wiring upgrade? I see from other posts on making headlights daytime but nothing on a strait upgrade. .. thanx joe | ||

There is a lot of half truths or semi-understanding here on your post... There are also plenty of posts on a straight upgrade....look for keywords like relays , headlights, Sucro kit, etc..... Even with stock wattage bulbs ( 55/65), there are "upgrades" required because Porsche foolishly powers all that headlight power through the dinky little headlight control stalk switch. Over time, this fails and usually you can't choose high /low beams..and it stays on high. So relays....even stock....are in order. That would cut power ( amps) almost to less than 1/100th the stock "load" through the column switch. Once you've done that, if the 69 is anything like a mid-80's car, you can squeek by with stock wire size up to about a 100 W bulb . Sure...beefier wire gauge would help but is not absolutely necessary. There are also more than 2 wattage options for H4's..so I don't understand your question in that regard. There are 65/55....80/100....90/130, ....and more. Dig a little deeper and you will find plenty of reading material. For more, look for Daniel Sterns's lighting web page, or a number of others, for basic electrical wiring upgrade hints. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/ - Wil

I am running 80/100 with the "sucro" relay kit with good results. I think the 55/65 you should still add relays as all the power is going thru the headlight switch and stalk.
