901 Tranny cost and parts...
Hey fellas !!
My 901 is starting to make sounds like the main bearings are going out. It still shifts nicely "up" through the gears but on down shifting, during engine braking, there is a significant fluttering whine coming from the tranny. My mech (GREAT guy) went for a spin with me and thought the same thing. I have never messed around inside a tranny before. Most I've done is drop the eng & all, put in a new clutch and done a valve adjustment myself. All of which wasn't very hard at all. I REALLY want to learn how to rebuild my tranny for myself, but I don't want to damage the one I've got. (Which Grady rebuilt for my Uncle when he owned the car!!) I've got a lead on a 901 for $500, asking price, I haven't countered yet, but I'm going to look at it tomorrow. Is that a pretty fair price ?? What will a new set of synchros cost me? Or can I get a good quality used set? What's the best source for 901 gears (if needed) & parts? I run my car pretty much any day that's nice. I auto-X any chance I get, and have just started the addiction of DE !!! I'd like to put a ZD in for 5th. That's what Grady put in mine and I LIKE the top end very much !! I don't know what other gears to go for or find out about. Thanks !!

be sure it's a 70/71 trans. those years are the only ones that will work. $500 is an OK deal, IF it's a good rebuildable core. i would suggest fixing what's wrong with the one you already own. they're easy enough.

He told me on the phone it was for a 70/71. I'm on the road for work right now and don't have access to all my stuff. Can you remind me the tranny # for the 70/71 series... I know it starts with 901 XXXXXX
My goal IS to fix the one I've got, but not having any experience doing ANY tranny work before I didn't really want to screw mine up... I have a possible correction too. I spoke with my Uncle tonight and it turns out Grady helped him with a 914 tranny for sure but he couldn't remember about the 911. He thinks it still original & not rebuilt. All the docs on it are at home too.... Thanks for the help...

Let’s see. I rebuild a ’70 transmission 30-35 years ago.
I guess I will volunteer to rebuild it again – this time for free labor, HeHe. Seriously, if you have a spare replacement to use, I’ll rebuild your uncle Frank's for free. Just supply the parts. I wonder if Frank will let me use the kitchen table? Perhaps we can do the 3-instrument 912 at the same time. HeHe. Does someone have Anne’s invoice for unlimited warranty? Well … no invoice necessary. I’ll do it. Let's see if I can find AFMSX or AEIOU for you. Anne might have liked 3000 rpm at 80 mph but not many others. A 2.2E likes to buzz along and was never happy with OE smog gearing Best, Grady

911/01 is what you are looking for. Over the last 2 years the average price has been under 500 and they have been purported to be good. I bought a very good one for 375.
the 901 tranny is easier to work on than any motor until you get to the ring and pinion. Even then, with the right tools, that can be done by the home mechanic. Hope that your R&P is good and get in there and see what's up. Common problems are worn dogteeth and syncros. A slider with the teeth is about 150. If you need 2 and a bunch of other parts, you will spend more than you can buy a used unit for. And that's with free labor. ![]() |
