Just tighten by hand and don't strong arm them. I never used a torque wrench on them, ever.

I usually do about 15 - 18 lbs-ft, but like John says, snug them up then a quarter turn or so more. You could try to torque to get a feel, but it's not a critical fastener, so don't overthink it.

15-18 ft. lbs. and never a leak...also rec. by the pro wrench that rebuilt my totally non leaking 930-10 after 43k miles.
Cross tighten as you would with head studs....and I sequentially tighten to 10 lbs. then to the 15. Maybe overkill but only takes a sec and dry as a bone.

I am gratified that JW, who has worked on these engines all the time for many years (not just once every few years), does these non-critical fasteners by hand, like I do. And he's doing customer engines, where leaks would affect his business, so methods that work are especially important.
I've taken to using a stubby socket wrench so I don't have a lot of leverage and can't overtighten. When you have leaks around the covers, the inclination is to twist them tighter. Not apt to help, can warp the cover some. I like to use the orange neoprene (?) pliable gaskets, which can be reused a lot (if you don't tear them, especially if you don't try to remove them when the engine is still hot), and it is especially important with these not to overtighten. But it is easy to develop the feel for hand tightening these so you get them all about the same tightness. |

As with many non critical fasteners, I usually tighten them until they are just snug and then add a 1/8 turn. If leaking, another 1/8 turn.

David as written above ,all you have to do get the feel in your hands..and start in the middle work your way out on each side....no torque wrench necessary..
