Where did reverse gear go...?

1978 930 – PO said shifter has a short shift kit…

I lost reverse today, literally. I can easily shift and drive in 1st thru 4th but when I try to move the shift lever over to push up into the reverse position it will not move far enough to the left for the transition into reverse.

I did notice that in any of the four gear selections the lateral play in the shifter is as great as 1 ¼” inches from the left most position. How much is too much lateral movement in 1st thru 4th? No clutch problems just reverse gear selection.

I thought I should seek the board’s wisdom before I start the shifter linkage etc disassembly – any suggestions?

Any suggestions???

Is the problem most likely in the shifter assembly or in the linkage?

Any suggestions at all?

Surely there's a 4 speed expert in the group.

I would start looking at the coupler. Not because I am a newbie, but since its rather accessible and could possibly cause that symptom.

Much better informed will correct me if I am wrong. Could not hurt to take a look though..

your coupler is probably off.

i would replace all of the worn bushings in the linkage as well as realign the coupler.( the wevo coupler is a good upgrade). it is amazing how much this improves the feel of an older 915
