911 SC owners - daily driver?

As a new (thrilled) owner of a 1979 911 SC I just wondered how many of you:

1.) Use your SC as a daily driver
2.) How many miles you drive it a week
3.) and how many miles you have on the odometer.

Me? yes, drive it daily to work, about 40 miles round trip. The odometer is stuck at 91k, I bought it without realizing it was broken.

I have a '74 with an 83 SC engine and '74 close ratio 915 transmission, so I kind of count. Daily driver, probably 80 miles a work week. The chassis has 305,000 miles, the motor about 80K since a rebuild. In the last 2 weeks it started doing the damn "1.8K RPM" idle thing, that then settles down to 850 RPM after a while. Also it's just developed a secondary "puff puff" sound in the exhaust note, much lower in volume than the primary sound, but there none the less. I am keeping an eye on it. Other than that it's been great.

Do it!

Looks Like I'm the dissenting voice.

When my Boxster was in the shop for about a month I was driving my Cayenne every day to work, little more than 40 miles round trip. Occasionally I would take my '83 SC Cab.

One day after work when I was in my '83 Cab, I was traveling north observing all traffic laws when a 20 year old *&^%#$% son of a #$%^* traveling south cut in front of me while turning left (east). His uninsured Jaguar hit the front drivers wheel and spun my car around 60 degrees.

Had I have been in my Cayenne or Boxster the air bags would have gone off and quite possible I may have avoided my knee surgery, a result of my left knee hitting the bolster.

I suggest your daily driver should protect you from the &*^%$^& idiots who drive with impunity out there.

My '75 S restoration is nearly complete. The heart of my '83 SC Roars within her. She will get exercised regularly but will never be a daily driver.

Take it from someone who Survived Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, drive a car with airbags, Porsche Stability Management, and antilock brakes.

Oh did I mention that after the police found the Jaguar driver 100% Negligent he still tried to sue me. Fortunately that did not go anywhere.

Sorry to hear about your accident and I hope you are OK now, but that could have happened ANY time you were driving your 911, not just when you were commuting.

Daily driver 78 SC since Jan I put 14K miles on it. Odo now shows 84K.
Overall daily use put some wear on the cars, e.g. the window regulator broke that day the returntrip was 160Miles by night with open window, get some more parking scars by other people hitting their doors into the 911, but it's worth.
Sitting in a throw away car and always imagine I could be in my 911, is way more painfull.

Sure thing - 160km (100 miles) per week and I look forward to the drive to work every morning. I notice people tend to be polite in traffic, letting me in etc. - of course I'm always courteous in return.

Probably wouldn't do it if I didn't have security parking at the end of the journey though (I'm paranoid about vandalism!).

The car is a 911SC Cabriolet and it has about 170,000km on it. I'm intent to keep on running up the mileage and doing religious scheduled maintenance as reuired...my other one (Coupe) is the garage queen...sunny days only!!!

Gratuitous pics...

Regards,

Paul

There was a multi-page thread about exactly this topic--daily driving a 911--about three weeks ago. A search should turn it up.

I drove my 77 w/ an SC engine daily for about 16 years (except in wintry conditions). The last 4 the mileage is way down now that my office is in my home. 186,000 miles.

Im at the University of Tennessee and i dont dare leave my 80Sc parked around campus. A lot of stupid drivers and also stupid drunks who slash tires and throw 44oz soft drinks on it. Now i drive a 94 Ford SHO instead on campus. But whenever i am back home one mile out of the Smokey mountain national park, I enjoy the roads everyday with the SC. 86k on the clock. I also have Webers and minimal heat but drive it in the winter assuming its not too slick out.

I not only daily drive my SC, I drive it to the store, to the pub, to the baseball game, to the movies, I park it on the street downtown, I park it wherever. The only time I don't drive it is the once every 2 months when it's really raining hard and we NEED to go somewhere, then I'll drive the Mazda. It gets rained on, snowed on, beat on by the sun...
125K on the clock now, probably 12K miles since I bought it 16 months ago.

'79 SC with a few upgrades (dual Carrera oil coolers, 46mm Weber carbs, S cam, carbon fiber clutch w/ RSR flywheel). Maybe I don't know better, but it's still a great daily driver for as long as summer lasts up here in the Great White North (about 5 months).

Rod.

Three days a week I ride the bike and two days in the SC, its got 72,300 on it and runs absolutely fantastic now that everything has been sorted out and repaired. It sat for years before I purchased it in June then like a chain reaction things started to break as I began driving it every day.

Everywhere I go I get questioned about the car.
