Here's an Interesting Take on the 911 vs Ferrari 308 Discussion

With a Lotus Europa, a 365BB, Lambo and a Dino thrown in for good measure!

Of course the 911 wins!

Looking at the footwork, it looks like the 911 was the only one who knows how do work the pedals.

Must have been Ayrton friggin Senna in the '81 308GTB to hold off those other cars as long as he did That 2-valve injected version of the 308 is the blacksheep of the family and they are stone slow.

I have to admit that the 308 seemed to wallow through the turns compared to the 911 which seemed pretty knife sharp.

I love the enthusiasm in the Japanes language.

...although, did I hear him call the 365BB a Lamborghini?

I always heard the Lambos were way overrated for power. Then again I have never been in one of the meatball flyers.

Sorry I call some Bull$hhh on this one...those cars in Japan are HIGHLY (and I mean HIGHLY) coveted and the Pantera, the LP4000 and the BB were not being pushed to their full potential. Either because the drivers were told not to get too competitive or due to respect for the cars and their owners overall.

If you notice the real hp cars were in mid pack or last with lost of safe distance between cars, no aggressiveness shown.

Respect is huge in Japanese culture and these high dollar European classic sprts cars are not the disposable Supras, RX7 etc that you normally see getting flogged around Motegi, Suzuka, Tokachi etc etc

The Lotus driver sounds like my wife when I'm driving

Abunai!Abunai!Abunai!Abunai!Abunai!Abunai!Abunai!
(danger)

THey were all being so careful, a good driver could have won in any of those cars except maybe the Dino which was a little under the weather.

Those HP ratings probably were gross estimates considering the era. IE: open exhaust, no cats (if equipped) no air cleaner, no air injection, no accessories attached, air was perfect that day, etc, etc

That was no race, that was a bunch of fancy cars out for a Sunday drive.

The guy in the 308 didn't even drop a gear when the 911 passed - he obviously wasn't trying.

I also think the 911 was the only rear race car there - it was a 73 2.7RS whereas the others appeared to be stock production cars - I could be wrong about this.

the muira has to be one of the most beautiful lambos ever made. The countach on the other hand... I think its funny how the 911 which was much older than a few of the cars kicked everyones butt. How the 365 and muira didnt destroy everyone is beyond me, they must handle like sh** or have poor drivers? And like someone else mentioned, a 1.6 liter lotus in the top 3 wow.

If Ive learned anything from these Japanese car shows (particularly "best motoring") its that they seem to almost rig the races. I mean there were episodes where a honda accord type R was faster than an M5, or an NSX could beat some high end supercars..give me a break.

I agree. I was driving one, and tried to pass a soccer mom in a Saturn Vue from a stop light. The kids in the back seat pointing and laughing was the icing on a rather foul tasting cake. I doubt if the woman even knew I was there. She just seemed to be motoring away from the stop light like a normal person, no high revs, nothing.

For the Japanese the best result for any competition is a tie. No one looses face with a tie. This can be seen in Japanese baseball when the umpire expands the strikzone in order to even the match.

Put me in any one of those cars.... I beat all of those drivers.

I would say the same for plenty of other track experienced guys here.

Bottom line is... neat video and all but those guys appeared to be screwing around more than really pushing the cars. That or they just were not very good. If I had a dollar for every badly early apex taken....

cool vid. thanks john. and i do agree that these are probably all nice stock examples of each model and were not driven to the full potential, still nice to see the little hunchback up front.

I think we should all agree. Trying to decipher the best car from a single track event has its .....err limitations. It's almost like observing cars pass one another on the freeway; i.e. brand X car passed brand Y car, thus brand X must be better and/or faster. If the cheapest car had won, the Lotus Europa, what then?
