Popped out of 5th......

Hello folks.

I'm look for a little insight on what caused my car to pop out of 5th gear driving to work this morning.

I was on the freeway cruising @ about 60 (morning commute) when I hit a rut on the road (road work) and the car popped out of 5th gear.

Shifted back into gear and headed to work. That shouldn't happen, what could cause something like that to happen.

my first guess: worn tranny mounts.
I have 105k on 83 SC.

What is it with shifters this week?!!!

You could be right about the tranns mounts, Carl. I would, however, suggest that you check/replace the bushings associated with the shifter.

There is a tang on the shift lever that meets with a tang on the shifter housing thus preventing the shifter from popping out of 5th gear. I am crappy at posting links so just do a search for shifters and you'll see what I mean.
