Shipping Experts - Carrera Tail

I have a fiberglass RSA America tail that I want to sell to another Pelican. It is just the tail and mount as one piece, no decklid.

Can some of you tell me what would be the best way to ship this? I looked at a shipping supply place and the biggest UPS allowed box seemed too small to adequately pack the tail. I want to REALLY make sure it is packed well so that it doesn't get damaged in shipment, which is a common story on these items.

Any insight is very much appreciated, by both sides of this deal

-Chris

Just did mine. Took it to a place called Pak-Mail. They had a box about 24" X 48" X 6" maybe 8". I shipped from Nebraska to Denver and it was fine. They put in cardboard corner braces then I believe filled with foam and peanuts. They used two boxes end to end.
Cost was like $30 shipping and $20.00 to pack it give or take a little. I decided to let them do it cause if it got F***ed up I wanted someone to blame. May sure you get insurance on it and they will take better care of it they don't want to pay out for damage.
edit - it went UPS

I used Greyhound with good results. Both parties need to be willing to go to the bus terminal.

++1 on grayhound. I shipped two front fenders in a good size box and it was cheap.

Greyhound here as well. Low cost and very fast ship time. However, make sure it's well packed.

I got mine from another pelican and it was packed VERY well. He took the tail apart and each piece was wrapped in bubble wrap and secured separately in the same box. He put enough padding between each piece that there was no way anything could touch. I would say that the box was twice the size of the tail and this purchase included the decklid. My shipper used fedex ground and it arrived perfect! I'm only sorry I can't remember his name so I could give him credit.

I received one from Pelican Gordon (GPC Turbo). It came from the Northwest to the Midwest via DHL in very good shape. He placed it vertically (tail and decklid combo) in a box that looked like it would hold a small/medium refrigerator. He placed the tail/decklid on its side and diagonally across the box. It was wrapped in multiple layers of foam/bubble wrap.

Consequently, I sold another tail/decklid combo I had been planning to use, but didn't .

I re-used Gordon's setup and DHL (much lower rates than UPS, FedEx or USPS for a bulky container). I heard from the buyer in Florida that everything looked fine.

It took me 15 minutes to un-pack that thing. You could have dropped it off a building and not put a mark on it.

Great wing by the way, thanks dfink.

Call it overkill, but check out the packing on this AIR IROC tail. I bought this from a gent up in New England, he crated it up and sent it by bus. Not even a scratch! (sorry for the bad photos)

I'm dealing with Fedex right now trying to get my money for a 993 tail that got cracked on both ends in transit. It was professionally packed by a place I've been using for 7 years, even so, Fedex beat the crap out of it.

I've shipped furniture via Greyhound successfully before, so that's a +1 for me.

Just thought I would post my results. I went to Pak Mail and had them do it all up only it was $85, not $50. Still, for peace of mind, it's nice to have them pack it and insure it etc.

I especially like the box damage right next to the fregile decal. Can you say eeediots?

They did give me a few hundred bucks but that was it, it doesn't fix the damage and it took about a month and was a big hassle to collect.

Jeesh, they could have at least made it worth your time and grief. Things like that should NEVER happen, no matter what the parts are.
