Early 911 front sway bar Q

Hi all,

I have two questions on installation of the early sway bar contruction (1972). (I replaced the sway bar bushings and installed the whole linkage):

- is it normal that the sway bar can be moved horizontally? I'm talking 0.75 inch or so. The arms attached to the bar aren't fixed against the mounting points on the chassis (AFAIK they shouldn't be), thus leaving some space between the arm and the mounting point while allows the bar movement when pushed

- I didn't take note of the orientation of the droplinks when taking the stuff apart (...), so forgot which one is left and which is right-side. I noticed that there is a certain angle between one of the ring ends and the droplink bar section. This seems to be required as the control arm attachment point is further forward than the attachment point on the a-arm. Is this correct? However, the ring ends seem to line up a bit ackward with both the attachment point on the a-arm and the control arm (few degrees off of the 'bolt-line' that goes through it). Is this supposed to be like that and is this supposed to be compensated by the bushings? Is there a specific droplink for the left and right side of the car, if not then I don't see how this minor misalignment at the link ends can be caused by switching left of right etc.

I hope anybody understands this.....

Thanks!

Dennis

Dennis,

Yes, the bar is free to move side-to-side in the bushings.

There is only one droplink part ... it isn't side-specific.

Thanks once again Warren.

I was thinking that the slight misalignment results from the suspension hanging in lowest position as the car is on stands. When it's back on it's wheels in a week or two, I will check.

Well, I don't. But, I have seen bushings placed inside the arms to prevent them from moving too close to the inner fender. I saw such an assembly on a concours car at Andial once. I like it myself. AFA the rest of your post, Warren is correct, of course, that the other parts are not side specific and the alignment of the drop link is what it is. Don't worry about it.
