M491 was offered in 1972/'73 - that was the code for the 2.8 Carrera RSR !

MPO is that the racing dept. codes should be kept separated from the rpo civilian codes. In that case the '84 M491 was the first use of the M491 code. M codes as rpo(regular production options) were first used for the 1978 model year cars. This situatinion is somewhat similar to the internal model codes, the '72 RS engine(2.7 mg case) was coded SC, which as we all know was the designation for the 1978-83 3 liter cars.
