M491 widebody

anyone know what year porsche first offered the m491option ?

For road-going US Carrera 3.2's it was 1984.

M491 was offered in 1972/'73 - that was the code for the 2.8 Carrera RSR !

That is correct the original 2.7RS lightweight Carrera was option M471, the 2.8RS widebody ferivative was M491.

MPO is that the racing dept. codes should be kept separated from the rpo civilian codes.

In that case the '84 M491 was the first use of the M491 code.

M codes as rpo(regular production options) were first used for the 1978 model year cars.

This situatinion is somewhat similar to the internal model codes, the '72 RS engine(2.7 mg case) was coded SC, which as we all know was the designation for the 1978-83 3 liter cars.

there was an 83 on ebay calling it a factory widebody
owner says it is , serial number had the 5 in the right place but i didn,t see the bigger brakes on it so i questioned it .
only m491 i,ve seen have been 84-
